MUSIC & WORSHIP
PURPOSE OF MUSIC
1. Declare His Glory (Psalm 96:2,3)
2. Part of Worship to God (Psalm96:8,9)
“Music forms a part of God's worship in
the courts above. We should endeavor in
our songs of praise to approach as nearly
as possible to the harmony of the
heavenly choirs” Ev 507
3. Praise and adoration to God (Psalm
105:1-5)
4. Edification.
Let the word of Christ dwell in
you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing
one another in
psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with
grace in your hearts to the
PURPOSE OF
MUSIC
Music was made to serve a
holy purpose, to lift the
thoughts to that which is
pure, noble, and elevating,
and to awaken in the soul
devotion and gratitude to
God."Patriarchs and
Prophets," p.594.
There are few means more effective for
fixing His words in the memory than
repeating them in song. And such song
has wonderful power. It has
power to subdue rude and uncultivated
natures;
power to quicken thought and
to awaken sympathy,
to promote harmony of action, and
to banish the gloom and
foreboding that destroy courage and
The value of song as a means of
education should never be lost sight
of. Let there be singing in the home, of
songs that are sweet and pure, and
there will be fewer words of censure and
more of cheerfulness and hope and joy.
Let there be singing in the school, and
the pupils will be drawn closer to God,
to their teachers, and to one another.
“Education”p. 169.
I saw singing to the glory of
God often drove the enemy
away, and praising God
would beat him back
and give us the
victory.
Manuscript 5,
1850.
When Christ was a child like these
children here, He was tempted to
sin, but He did not yield to
temptation. As He grew older He
was tempted, but the songs His
mother had taught
Him to sing came into His mind, and
He would lift His voice in praise. And
before His companions were aware
of it, they would be singing with Him.
God wants us to use every facility
HOW MUSICFOR
WORSHIP SHOULD
BE CONDUCTED?
1. WORSHIP IN
SPIRIT AND
(UNDERSTANDI
NG)
 John 4:23-24
But the hour cometh, and now
is, when the true worshippers
shall worship the Father in
spirit and in truth: for the
Father seek such to worship
Him.
God is a Spirit: and they that
worship Him must worship Him
WORSHIP
begins with
INDWELLING of the
HOLY SPIRIT within us &
UNDERSTANDING
the BIBLICAL
TRUTH
I will pray with the spirit,
and I will pray with the
understanding also: I will
sing with the spirit,
and I will sing with
the understanding
also.
(I Corinthians 14:15)
How can those who have no
interest in theWord of God,
who have never read HisWord
with a sincere desire to
understand its truths, be
expected to sing with the
spirit and the understanding?
How can their hearts be in
harmony with the words of
sacred song?
2.It must come
from TRUE
relationship
with GOD
 But those who assemble to worship
Him should put away every evil thing.
Unless they worship Him in spirit and
truth and in the beauty of holiness,
their coming together will be of no
avail. Of such the Lord declares,
"This people draweth nigh unto Me
with their mouth, and honoreth Me
with their lips; but their heart is far
from Me." Matthew 15:8, 9. --- Prophet &
Kings pg. 50
JOY REVERENCE
3.
Leviticus 19:30
Ye shall keep my
sabbaths,
and reverence my
sanctuary; I am
Jehovah.
Hebrew 12:28
Wherefore we receiving a
kingdom
which cannot be moved,
let us have grace, whereby we
may
serve God acceptably with
reverence and godly fear
" Humility and reverence should
characterize the deportment of all who
come into the presence of God. In the
name of Jesus we may come before Him
with confidence, but we must not
approach Him with the boldness of
presumption, as though we were on a
level with ourselves….There should
remember that they are in His sight whom
seraphim adore, before whom angels veil
their faces. God is greatly to be revered;
all who truly realize His presence will
bow in humility before Him."
Patriarch and Prophet pg 252.
Psalm 100: 1-3
Make a joyful noise unto
the LORD, all ye lands.
Serve the LORD with
gladness: come before his
presence with singing. (3)
Know ye that the LORD He
is God…
James 5:13
Is any among you
suffering? let him
pray. Is anyone
cheerful? let
him sing psalms
4. There must be a
difference between
Holy and profane
(Ezekiel 44:23)
(3) And Moses said to Aaron, “ This is what the Lord spoke, saying:
‘By those who come near me I must be regarded as holy; And
before all the peopleI
must be glorified. So Aaron held his peace.
Leviticus 10:3
God designed to teach the people
that they must approach Him with
reverence and awe, and in His own
appointed manner. He cannot
accept partial obedience. It was not
enough that in this solemn season
of worship nearly everything was
done as He had directed. God has
pronounced a curse upon those who
depart from His commandments,
and put
no difference between common
5. Appropriate to
the Occasion
of divine worship should select
hymns with music appropriate to
the occasion, not
funeral notes, but
cheerful, yet solemn
melodies.
The voice can and should be
modulated, softened, and
subdued.
Signs of the Times, June 22, 1882.
{Ev 508.1}
6. Orderliness &
Organization
1 Corinthians 14:33
For God is not a God of
disorder but of peace, as in all
the congregations of the
Lord's people. (N.I.V)
1 Corinthians 14:40
Let all things be done
decently and in order (KJV)
Testimonies, vol. 1, pp. 649,650.
Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order
characterizes all their movements. The
more closely we imitate the harmony
and order of the angelic host, the more
successful will be the efforts of these
heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see
no necessity for harmonious action,
and are disorderly, undisciplined, and
disorganized in our course of action,
angels, who are thoroughly organized
and move in perfect order, cannot work
They turn away in grief, for they are not
authorized to bless confusion,
distraction, and disorganization. All
who desire the cooperation of the
heavenly messengers, must work in
unison with them. Those who have the
unction from on high, will in all their
efforts encourage order, discipline, and
union of action, and then the angels of
God can co-operate with them. But
never, never will these heavenly
messengers place their indorsement

3 DIRECTIONS ON THE CHOICE OF MUSIC
Up – Reach: Praise ,
adoration and Thanksgiving
Out – Reach: Teach and
admonish
In – Reach:
Personal
response/commit
Musical talent too
often fosters pride
and ambition
for display, and
singers have but
little thought
o
Display is not religion nor
sanctification.There is nothing more
offensive in God's sight than a display
of instrumental music when those
taking part are not consecrated, are
not making melody
in their hearts to the Lord.
The offering most sweet and
acceptable in God's sight is a heart
made humble by self-denial, by lifting
the cross and following Jesus. {Ev
When turned to good
account, music is a
blessing, but…
when allowed to take the
place of devotion and
prayer, it is a
terrible curse.
Pray more than you
sing.
Doyou not stand
in greater
need of prayer
than of singing? {1T
513.1}
 But it is sometimes more difficult to discipline the
singers and keep them in working order, than to
improve the habits of praying and exhorting.
Many want to do things after their own style;
they object to consultation, and are impatient
under leadership. Well-matured plans are
needed in the service of God. Common
sense is an excellent thing in the worship of the
Lord. The thinking powers should be
consecrated to Christ, and ways and means
should be devised to serve him best. The
church of God, who are trying to do good by
living out the truth and seeking to save souls,
can be a power in the world if they will be
In their efforts
to reach the
people, the Lord's
messengers are
not to followthe
ways of the world.
Evangelism pg.509
…when the heart is cleansed
and sanctified, and the members
of the church
are partakers of the divine
nature,
a power will go forth from the
church, who believe the truth, that will
cause
melody in the heart.
Men and women will not then depend
upon their instrumental music but

  • 5. There are few means more effective for fixing His words in the memory than repeating them in song. And such song has wonderful power. • 6. The value of song as a means of education should never be lost sight of. Let there be singing in the home, of songs that are sweet and pure, and there will be fewer words of censure and more of cheerfulness and hope and joy. • 8. When Christ was a child like these children here, He was tempted to sin, but He did not yield to temptation. As He grew older He was tempted, but the songs His mother had taught Him to sing came into His mind, and He would lift His voice in praise. And before His companions were aware of it, they would be singing with Him. God wants us to use every facility
  • 10. 1. WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND (UNDERSTANDI NG)
  • 11.  John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seek such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him
  • 12. WORSHIP begins with INDWELLING of the HOLY SPIRIT within us & UNDERSTANDING the BIBLICAL TRUTH
  • 13. I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. (I Corinthians 14:15)
  • 14. How can those who have no interest in theWord of God, who have never read HisWord with a sincere desire to understand its truths, be expected to sing with the spirit and the understanding? How can their hearts be in harmony with the words of sacred song?
  • 15. 2.It must come from TRUE relationship with GOD
  • 16.  But those who assemble to worship Him should put away every evil thing. Unless they worship Him in spirit and truth and in the beauty of holiness, their coming together will be of no avail. Of such the Lord declares, "This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me." Matthew 15:8, 9. --- Prophet & Kings pg. 50
  • 18. Leviticus 19:30 Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary; I am Jehovah.
  • 19. Hebrew 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear
  • 20. " Humility and reverence should characterize the deportment of all who come into the presence of God. In the name of Jesus we may come before Him with confidence, but we must not approach Him with the boldness of presumption, as though we were on a level with ourselves….There should remember that they are in His sight whom seraphim adore, before whom angels veil their faces. God is greatly to be revered; all who truly realize His presence will bow in humility before Him." Patriarch and Prophet pg 252.
  • 21. Psalm 100: 1-3 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. (3) Know ye that the LORD He is God…
  • 22. James 5:13 Is any among you suffering? let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? let him sing psalms
  • 23. 4. There must be a difference between Holy and profane (Ezekiel 44:23)
  • 24. (3) And Moses said to Aaron, “ This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the peopleI must be glorified. So Aaron held his peace. Leviticus 10:3
  • 25. God designed to teach the people that they must approach Him with reverence and awe, and in His own appointed manner. He cannot accept partial obedience. It was not enough that in this solemn season of worship nearly everything was done as He had directed. God has pronounced a curse upon those who depart from His commandments, and put no difference between common

The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity for harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined, and disorganized in our course of action, angels, who are thoroughly organized and move in perfect order, cannot work
  • 31. They turn away in grief, for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction, and disorganization. All who desire the cooperation of the heavenly messengers, must work in unison with them. Those who have the unction from on high, will in all their efforts encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can co-operate with them. But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their indorsement
