The anterior compartment of the thigh contains several muscles that act on the knee joint. The quadriceps femoris group is made up of four muscles - the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and vastus medialis. Together they form the bulk of the thigh and act to extend the knee. All four muscles originate proximally and insert into the patella tendon distally. The femoral nerve innervates these muscles.
