This document discusses optical storage media such as compact discs and digital video disks. It provides a brief history of optical discs including the development of CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-RW and DVD. It then describes the basic technology behind optical discs, noting that data is stored in pits and lands on the reflective layer and read with a laser, allowing for much higher storage densities than magnetic disks. Finally, it discusses video disks and their use for storing motion pictures and audio in an analog format.
