2. Multimedia
Multimedia: Two or more media or it means the combination of two or more
continuous media. Multimedia is system, which is a combination of following as:
• Text
• Images or Graphics
• Animation
• Sound
• Video
Types of Media:
• Audio
• Video
3. Multimedia
These five media are used to represent the information to
the users via the computer.
Many multimedia packages comprise of only two or three
medias of the above media, sometimes the use of all media
types may not be appropriate for the information exchange.
All computers have inbuilt sound cards. Playing of notes,
music is possible.
4. Classification of Multimedia
We can classify the multimedia application in two major categories.
Delay Sensitive: These applications are sensitive to timing delays.
Many multimedia applications are useless if the sender to receiver
delay is more than a few hundred milliseconds.
Loss of Tolerant: Most of the multimedia applications are loss
tolerant. This means that they allow they allow the loss of data to
some extent without compromising with the quality. So, the
multimedia applications such as e-mail, FTP and Telnet.
5. Examples of Multimedia
Applications
Multimedia applications can be broadly categorized
into three classes as under:
• Streaming stored audio/video
• Streaming live audio/video
• Interactive audio/video
6. Streaming stored audio/video
A client can download the files through internet
which are in compressed form and stored on
server.
Example: Stored Audio Songs, Famous lectures.
Stored Video: Movies, T.V shows and Music
clips.
7. Streaming live audio/video
A user listens to broad audio and video through
internet.
Example: Internet radio. Some radio stations
broadcast their programs only on internet.
8. Interactive audio/video
People use the internet to interactively
communicate with one another.
Example: Internet teleconferencing and
Internet telephony.
