Juniper Networks is delivering a new network that enables businesses and consumers to maximize the potential of their products and services and meets the infrastructure needs of the next decade. In 2010 are revenue was over $4B, we have approx 8500 employees world wide and we deliver networking solutions to the worlds leading service provider and enterprise organizations. Our solutions include routing, security, switching and content distribution. Our founder and CTO, PradeepSindu, laid down a vision and a mission….
That mission was to connect everything and empower everyone. We look to deliver on this mission by following strategies that embrace innovation, automation and simplicity so that we can help our customers minimise operational cost amd maximise scale and flexibility. We do this through custom silicon development that we build into our networking systems that run and are managed by Junos software – a modular, single code stream that is embedded across all our technologies.Using this approach, we deliver two key benefits for cloud services: an open network environment that maximises flexibility and scale and...a data center fabric that changes the way data centers can be built and results in lowering the total cost of owning and running datacenters while at the same time maximising scalability and performance of applications.Lets spend a little time looking at these two areas. First the data center...
The application architectures have evolved from client-server to distributed apps, causing an underlining shift in traffic pattern. Applications have become federated with architectures such asService-Oriented Architectures, Web Services, and Software as a service. The newer applications are increasing the communication between server to server causing more east west traffic within the data center.Server virtualization is helping businesses gain efficiency by consolidating many physical servers into fewer high-performance virtualized servers. Of all the traffic types traversing an Ethernet network, storage has risen in prominence in recent years. This traffic type has its very own unique characteristics and demands a separate treatment than other traditional Ethernet traffic. To support both virtualization and convergence, the data center network needs to offer:- high performance- scale, - availabilitya way to support strong user SLAs (around throughput, latency, packet loss and security)Networking in the data center has NOT progressed and is now a barrier slowing the pace of innovation in the rest of the data center.
Juniper has innovated in the data center to produce a new fabric. One that has the simplicity of a single switch but the resilience and scale of a network. By simplifying the fabric, we can dramatically reduce the operational costs of managing the data center, reduce the overall number of network components and remove the location-limitation associated with the deployment of compute, storage and appliances that has led to the concept of ‘pods’ within the data center and restrict the dynamic movement of VMs and applications. We call this new fabric Qfabric.
Lets now move beyond the datacenter. We can consider the cloud services network to consist of 3 components – CRDC, SEL and SMCs. By building openness within the network, at the device level and at the management level, allows 3rd party developers to create unique and flexible solutions for the delivery of services in response to user behaviour, application requirements and service policies. Customers and partners can write applications to run directly within the network using open interfaces to the network operating system (Junos SDK). And/or develop custom applications within or to the management layer (Junos Space).
From a functional perspective, the network must be automated and orchestrated to be able to reduce cost of operations and react to the dynamic nature of the cloud. It must offer the appropriate ‘contracted’ quality of services and be secure end to end. Application security is NOT only in the data center but extends out the the users’ PC, pad or smartphone. The ultimate value of these attributes is the ability to offer service level agreements to customers so that they can confidently plan their businesses around the use of cloud services.
In summary, a well architected and innovative network can have positive impacts well beyond the network itself. By simplifying the operational environment and allowing compute and storage to be deployed more efficiently and flexible, the network can have a significat benefit in terms of the overall cost of service delivery.By proactive delivery of contracted levels of service and by reacting to the needs of users, applications and services, the network can positively impact the customer experience to differentiate cloud services for the service provide an maximise their effectiveness for the enterprise customer.
