Geography of Pakistan
Mountain Ranges of Pakistan
Pakistan is home to several significant mountain ranges,
many of which are part of the larger Himalayan and
Karakoram Mountain systems. These mountain ranges
contribute to the country's diverse and rugged
topography, providing a wide range of landscapes,
climates, and ecosystems. Here are some of the most
prominent mountain ranges in Pakistan:
1. HIMALAYAN RANGE
The Himalayan Range extends into
northern Pakistan, particularly in
the Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-
Baltistan regions.
Some notable peaks in the
Pakistani Himalayas include Nanga
Parbat, the ninth-highest
mountain in the world, and
Rakaposhi.
1. HIMALAYAN RANGE
These mountains offer excellent
opportunities for trekking and
mountaineering.
Their average height is about
4000m. They comprise the
following sub-parallel ranges: -
Deosai Range,C entral Himalayas,
Lesser Himalayas and Siwaliks
I-DEOSAI RANGE
The Deosai Range is primarily situated in the Skardu District of
Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan. It is relatively remote and
can be reached by road from Skardu, which is the nearest major
town.
The plateau is located at a high altitude, with its elevation
ranging from around 4,114 meters (13,497 feet) to 4,770 meters
(15,652 feet) above sea level. Deosai National Park is a popular
tourist destination.
II. CENTRAL HIMALAYAS
The Central Himalayas of Pakistan are a breathtaking mountain
range known for their towering peaks, including Nanga Parbat,
the world's ninth-highest mountain, and stunning natural
beauty, attracting trekkers and adventurers from around the
globe. This region offers a unique blend of rugged terrain and
rich cultural heritage, making it a remarkable destination for
those seeking both adventure and cultural experiences.
III) LESSER HIMALAYAS
The Lesser Himalayas, also known as the Outer or Sub-
Himalayas, are a significant geographical feature in
Pakistan, extending along the country's northern and
northwestern regions. They are part of the broader
Himalayan mountain range and have a diverse
topography and altitude
IV) SIWALIKS
The Siwalik Mountains in Pakistan, part of the Himalayan
Mountain range is parallel to the Himalayas. They form a
transitional zone between the Indian subcontinent and the
Himalayas. The mountains are renowned for their rich fossil
deposits dating back to the Miocene and Pliocene epochs,
providing insights into the area's geological and biological
history.
IV) SIWALIKS
The Siwalik Mountains in Pakistan, part of the Himalayan
Mountain range is parallel to the Himalayas. They form a
transitional zone between the Indian subcontinent and the
Himalayas. The mountains are renowned for their rich fossil
deposits dating back to the Miocene and Pliocene epochs,
providing insights into the area's geological and biological
history.
PEAKS OF HIMALAYAS
• Nanga Parbat 8126 m
• Rakhiot Peak 7070 m
• Ganalo Peak 6606 m
• Laila Peak 5971m
• Sarwali Peak 6096m
2. KARAKORAM RANGE
The Karakoram Range is one of the most famous mountain ranges
in Pakistan, known for its dramatic peaks and rugged terrain.
It is home to some of the world's highest mountains, including
K2, the second-highest peak on Earth, and Broad Peak.
The region also features the Baltoro Glacier, which is one of the
largest glaciers outside the polar regions.
The Karakoram Range is a major attraction for mountaineers and
adventure enthusiasts.
The Hindu Kush Range extends into northern Pakistan and
forms part of the country's border with Afghanistan.
3. HINDUKUSH RANGE
It is known for its high passes, making it an important
historical and cultural route connecting South Asia and
Central Asia.
The Hindu Kush region is known for its challenging trekking
routes and diverse ethnic communities.
Their main part lies in
Afghanistan Trich Mir
(7690 m) and Noshaq
(7484 m) are the
highest peaks of the
area. These ranges
occupy the Chitral
district.
3. HINDUKUSH RANGE
4. SULAIMAN RANGE
The Sulaiman Range is
located in the
southwestern part of
Pakistan, primarily in
the Balochistan
province. It runs parallel
to the border with
Afghanistan
This range is generally
less well-known and
explored compared to
the Himalayas and
Karakoram.
5. SALT RANGE
The Salt Range is a hill
system in the Punjab
province of Pakistan.
It is renowned for
its rich deposits of
salt, including the
Khewra Salt Mine,
one of the world's
oldest and largest
salt mines.
The Salt Range also
contains historical and
archaeological sites,
such as the ancient city
of Taxila.
6. KIRTHAR RANGE:
This range is
characterized by its
arid and rugged
terrain and is
relatively less
explored for
outdoor activities.
The Kirthar Range is
located in the southern
part of Pakistan,
forming a natural
boundary between
Sindh and Balochistan
provinces.
These mountain ranges contribute to Pakistan's
diverse geography and offer a range of
opportunities for outdoor adventures, from trekking
and mountaineering to exploring rich cultural and
historical heritage sites.
They also play a vital role in the country's climate
and water resources, with their rivers and glaciers
supplying water to the Indus River system, which is
crucial for agriculture and the livelihood of the
population in the region.
