Question 1
πεπιστεύκοτες δὲ
ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ ὄχλοι.
But having believed,
the crowds followed him.
Question 2
ὁ ἑωρακὼς
ἐμὲ
ἑώρακεν τὸν πατέρα.
The one who has seen
me
has seen the Father.
Question 3
Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος,
ἀπεσταλμένος
παρὰ θεοῦ,
ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης.
A man came,
having been sent
from God,
whose name was John.
Question 4
τὸ γεγεννημένον
ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς
σάρξ ἐστιν,
καὶ τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ
τοῦ πνεύματος
πνεῦμά ἐστιν.
What has been born
from flesh
is flesh,
and what has been born
from the Spirit
is spirit.

καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο
ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ·
ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς
ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων
καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς.
And they were amazed
at his teaching,
for he was teaching them
as having authority
and not as the scribes.

Καὶ εὐθὺς
ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος
παραγίνεται Ἰούδας
εἷς τῶν δώδεκα
καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ὄχλος.
And immediately,
while he is still speaking,
Judas comes
one of the twelve
and a crowd with him.

For
not yet
John had
been thrown
into prison.
Question 8
καὶ ἐγένετο ἧχος
ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ

ὅλον τὸν οἶκον
οὗ ἦσαν καθήμενοι.
And a sound came
from heaven
and it filled
the whole house
where they were
sitting.

αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος

πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν
εἰς αὐτόν.
While he was speaking
these things
many believed
in him.

ἔλεγεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς

ἐὰν ὑμεῖς μείνητε
ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ,

Therefore Jesus was saying
to the Jews
who had believed
in him:
If you remain
in my word,
truly you are my disciples.

Question 11

τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν

And the elders
of the Jews
having known Jesus
with the disciples
received one of those
who made
the promise
to betray him.

Question 15
Προσευξαμένου μου
ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ
εἰσῆλθεν ἀνήρ
καὶ ἠσπάσατό με,
κἀγὼ ἠσπασάμην αὐτόν.
After I prayed
in the house,
a man entered
and greeted me,
and I greeted him.
Question 16
οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἔφαγον
τὸ μάννα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ,
καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον·
ἄρτον ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς
φαγεῖν.
Our fathers ate
the manna in the desert,
just as it is written,
bread from heaven
he gave to them
to eat.

οὐκ ἔγνωσαν
αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ

ἀλλʼ ὅτε
ἐδοξάσθη Ἰησοῦς

these things had been written
about him

they did these things to him.
Question 18
ἐλθόντος τοῦ λόγου
γνώσονται
τὸν προφήτην
ὃν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοῖς
κύριος
ἐν πίστει.
After the word comes,
they will know
the prophet
whom the Lord sent
to them
in faith.
Question 19a
Καὶ ἔρχονται
πάλιν
εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα.
καὶ περιπατοῦντος αὐτοῦ
ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ
And they are coming
again
into Jerusalem,
and while he is walking
in the temple
Question 19b
ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν
οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς
καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς
καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι
καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ·
ἐν ποία ἐξουσίᾳ
ταῦτα ποιεῖς;
They are coming to him
the high priests
and the scribes
and the elders
and they are saying to him,
“In what authority
are you doing these things?”

καλέσω
τὸν οὐ λαόν μου
λαόν μου
καὶ [καλέσω]
τὴν οὐκ ἠγαπημένην
ἠγαπημένην.
I will call
the not-my-people,
“my people,”
and [I will call]
the not-having-been-loved,
“having-been-loved.”

Editor's Notes

  • #19 The opening words προσευξαμενου μου are the genitive absolute. Since the participle is aorist, the sentence refers to action that took place prior to that of the main verb, hence the rendering “after I prayed.”
