                          “ The Book of Reconciliation”
    Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our
   dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer, And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier,
    and to the church in thy house: Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank
   my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the
           Lord Jesus, and toward all saints; That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the
    acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in thy
  love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. Wherefore, though I might be much bold in
  Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul
   the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in
  my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: Whom I have sent
     again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy
     stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: But without thy mind would I do nothing;
       that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. For perhaps he therefore departed for a
   season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved,
    specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? If thou count me therefore a
    partner, receive him as myself. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; I Paul
  have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine
        own self besides. Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. Having
  confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. But withal prepare
   me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you. There salute thee Epaphras, my
                  fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.
                The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Overall parallel – Parable of the Prodigal Son
Luke chapter 15 verses 11-32
11 And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And
he divided unto them his living. 13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey
into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land;
and he began to be in want. 15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to
feed swine. 16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 17 And when he came to
himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to
my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19 And am no more worthy to be
called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father
saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against
heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him;
and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24 For this my son was
dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and
drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said unto
him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was angry, and would not
go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither
transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy
son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with
me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was
lost, and is found.

An interesting connection
Colossians chapter 3 verse 22 – chapter 4 verse 1

22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the
flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of
heart, fearing God:
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not

unto men;
24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the

inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he

hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
4v1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal;

knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

An example outline of the letter
The relevance of the Epistle to us
• The book’s simple allegory

    Philemon               Paul                 Onesimus
[Allegory = God] [Allegory = Christ] [Allegory = Us]

• The importance of mercy,
  not the rights and wrongs of the situation

            “Blessed are the merciful:
           for they shall obtain mercy.”
                                          (Matthew 5v7)
The tone set, opening 3 words

    “Paul, a prisoner”
• Romans “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ”
• 1 Corinthians “Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ”
• 2 Corinthians “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ”
•   Galatians         “Paul, an apostle”

    The whole letteron a slide “ The Book of Reconciliation” Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer, And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house: Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints; That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you. There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. 25 verses 445 words

    Overall parallel –Parable of the Prodigal Son Luke chapter 15 verses 11-32 11 And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. 13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. 15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found. Onesimus “my *Paul’s+ son” His life He “ministered Paul asked Philemon to (v.10) “departed for a season” changed unto me” “receive” back Onesimus (v.16), seemingly having direction [Paul], serving a with compassion (v.15) and “wronged” and ‘owing’ (v.18) (v.11) Roman citizen for there to be “joy” (v.20) (v.13)

    An interesting connection Colossianschapter 3 verse 22 – chapter 4 verse 1 22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. 4v1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
