labyrinthine city streets below. It is a teller of time, signifying nightfall and furthermore the coming

and contentment, the moon therefore serves as a reminder that the light still exists–while it is far off,

Moonlight is oftentimes so dim that it is not entirely useful, and could serve as a bitter reminder of
the light the speaker once contained in his life. What this all compares to are the well–meaning

Moonlight Film Analysis
In the United States, our society maintains both dominant cultures dictated by white descent, and
non–dominant cultures that have been oppressed and marginalized by those of white descent. The
film Moonlight (2016), directed by Barry Jenkins, depicts cultural expectations of black males in
America and what consequences they have. While the founders of the United States cite societal
arguments for equality and justice, the film provides commentary on specific systemic issues that
prove these founding principles are not truly embodied by our society. Black men for hundreds of
years, through slavery and beyond, are susceptible to the cultural implications that they are given at
birth. These implications are a result of oppressive systemic inputs by the dominating culture that is
only engaging if you are white, male, straight, and rich. Moonlight (2016) gives viewers the
perspective of how these systems of communication affect black men's identity in America today,
through communication and language. The film further challenges the conversation around
disparities across racial communications by discussing the additional challenges that exist if a

Analysis Of A Harbor In Moonlight
Claude–Joseph Vernet is a very largely known French artist from the early 1700's. He has been
known to be one of the best landscape painters of all time. Vernet paints from a different perspective
than many artists and his art leaves a lasting impact on viewers' minds. Many of his paintings are
famous including "A Harbor in Moonlight" which is located at the St. Louis Art Museum.
A Harbor in Moonlight stood out as a very interesting piece. What initially caught my eye was the
different lighting and shades of every color in this painting. My first reaction was a sense of
calmness and relief. There are many reasons that I got the initial first feelings that I did. The biggest
reason is the arrangements of lighting. Vernet does a good job of incorporating lighting into every
part of this piece. I feel that the lighting plays the biggest role in this artwork because without it, it is
very dull and dark. The result of a dull and dark painting would not be anywhere near the same
result as the lighting.
It almost seems like the lighting is meant to say something or symbolize something. Just by looking
at it, each light has a different role and level of importance in the picture. The main sources of light
that stood out to me were the fire, moon, lighthouse, and even the reflection of light on the surface
of the water. All of them provide a different sense of feeling in this scene. The fire gives me a

Moonlight Sonata Analysis
The Piano Sonata No.14 in C sharp minor (Moonlight Sonata); Op.27, No.2, was composed by
Ludwig Van Beethoven in 1801. The name Moonlight Sonata was not coined by Beethoven himself,
but instead by the German music critic, Ludwig Rellstab in 1836. Rellstab wrote that the sonata had
reminded him of the reflected moonlight off of Lake Lucerne, hence the Moonlight Sonata became
the unofficial, moreover a permanent title of the piece (The History of the 'Moonlight' Sonata,
2012). Regarding the reasoning of which Beethoven composed the piece there are two reasonings
that have circulated. Due to the Beethoven experiencing a loss in hearing, it has been interpreted that
the piece itself is a means of him accepting his impending deafness (The History of the 'Moonlight'
Sonata). This can be heard through the slow fluctuation in the treble while there is a sense of
weariness in the bass, which one can argue imparts the sense of acceptance Beethoven may have
about becoming less and less able to hear his music. Therefore, another possible reason for
Beethoven to write the piece is that he had written it out of love for his 17–year–old pupil, Countess
Giulietta Guicciardi (Giulietta Guicciardi (1784–1856), Beethoven and Moonlight Sonata, 2013).

We all have that one movie that we would never really watch until we are told to do so by a friend or
in my case for an assignment, that movie for me would have to be the film Moonlight. Moonlight
came out to theaters on October 21, 2016. The film did not have remarkable success in theaters until
after the Oscars. Moonlight won three Oscars in 2017, including Best Picture. The film was directed
and written by Berry Jenkins. Jenkins grew up in a housing project located in Miami Florida. He
lived with his mom however, she was a drug addict, so he then began to live with his grandma.
Jenkins stated that "There was seven or eight of us in a two–person apartment. There was usually
food but sometimes not. The lights usually worked but sometimes not." Although the film was
written by Jenkins he also had help from a unpublished play written by Tarell Alvin. The play was
called In Moonlight Black Blues Look Blue. Tarell Alvin had many similarities to Berry Jenkins.
Both grew up in the same coarse neighborhood with a mother addicted to crack. With the bond the
two shared with their struggles growing up it made the film that much more realistic and important

Some viewers complained about how the actors do not look like one another, however, the acting of
the actors was capable of making Chiron seem to be the same person through the way they delivered
the dialogue and through the mannerism they showcased. The same can be said for Kevin, a
character that plays Chiron's love interest and best friend who also had to be played by three
different actors. The casting for adult Kevin did not quite reach the same standards of the casting for
adult Chiron. It felt almost as if there was something missing with adult Kevin compared to teen and

Humans are constantly criticized for being "different," so forming an identity within a judgemental
and violent community proves to be mentally exhausting. Moonlight (2016) by renowned director
Barry Jenkins, vividly depicts three different stages of the life of a boy named Chiron while he
transforms from a young boy to a man who struggles with coping to find who he truly is. Living in a
poor crime–ridden neighborhood in Miami, Florida, Chiron goes through many trials and
tribulations throughout his life to find who he is in a society that gives no mercy to anyone in it.

Analysis Of A Flower Garden By Li Bai
This poem creates a scene in which the poet, Li Bai is sitting alone under the moonlight as he sips
on his drink and can share his loneliness with no one but the moon and his shadow. By pointing out
that he is at a flower garden with moonlight shined upon him and a pot of wine by his side, the
setting of the poem is rather pleasant and relaxing. The poet, however, appears to be frustrated
because he has no real friends who are there for him. With a quick thought, Li Bai decides to think
the moon and his shadow as his companion and meanwhile starts to sing and dance with them. The
fact that neither the moon nor his shadow is animated does not bother Li Bai as he slowly gets more
involved in the atmosphere he created for himself, or, in his words, it "makes us [them] three". From
there on, the poet does not care about what other people think of him anymore and instead starts to

create an image for the readers, Li Bai incorporates myriad rhetorical devices in the writing of the

opens up with an image of a flower garden a which indicates the poet's location and sets the tone for
the slight twist in emotion in next couple of lines of the poem. The poet's mentioning of his
loneliness sharply contrasts the setting in which both wine and flowers are supposed to bring a sense
of prosperity and happiness. Moving on, the fourth and fifth lines express Li Bai's loneliness by
creating an image of the faraway moon and his shadow. The line states that the moon is too far away
to enjoy the wine with Li Bai, and his shadow cannot communicate with or truly comprehend the
poet. Li Bai's use of the phrase "creeps about my heels" to describe the behavior of his shadow is
interesting thoughtful, showing that even though the shadow is very close to him in distance, Li Bai

Theorist Vsevolod Pudovkin claims that narrative films are mainly a "product of construction" and
cautious compilations of "selections of images that have been shot" (Renée).
Thus, editing enhances the narrative and enables the viewers to better understand and connect with
the characters. This idea is apparent in the film Moonlight (2016), directed by Barry Jenkins,
surrounding a young black man, Chiron's journey to adulthood. With a limited amount of dialogue
in the film, the filmmakers attempt to show, instead of tell the audience, the narrative. Therefore, the
film is formally creative, utilizing various cinematic techniques such as, twirling camera angels,
non–sync sound, and bold colors to engulf the audience. One particular example of the filmmakers'
decision is the pivotal diner scene between Chiron and his childhood friend, Kevin.
In the diner scene, the personal relationship between Chiron and Kevin is showcased. Jenkins
immediately cuts to Chiron exiting his car with loud rap music blaring, purposefully illustrating the
world in which he currently resides. However, upon entering the diner, the atmosphere immediately

I downloaded Moonlight off the internet last night. I often watch films with my parents but they
usually think they're shit. Moonlight is one of few films that really hit home, so much so that I have

To contrast, in Moonlight not only does one witness various Black masculinities, but none are
portrayed as 'deficient'. Rather, it is the environment, shaped, in part, by structural racism and
violence that exacerbates the plight of the characters. For instance, in a scene between Little
(Chiron) and his father–figure, Juan, the former asks Juan if he is a drug dealer. Juan replies that he
is, and Little, knowing that his mom is addicted to drugs, becomes upset and leaves (Moonlight).

out in The Pursuit of Happyness, then the development of Chiron would have been constrained by
the politics of respectability that Walcott and Hammonds critique. For instance, if Chiron had been
depicted accepted or rejecting Juan after his revelation, the audience would have recognized it as an
individualizing gesture. In other words, whichever course of action the filmmakers portrayed, it
would still, to an extent, frame Juan's drug dealing and Chiron's reaction to it, as individual acts
rather than decisions shaped by systemic factors. The narrative would then shift to one where the
audience perceives Chiron as either blindly following Juan's footsteps, or, like the character of Chris
Gardner, adhering to hegemonic masculinity in order to transcend the deficient masculinities
modelled to him. Thus, by not resolving the scene but, nevertheless, still drawing clear parallels
between the two characters throughout the film, there is an implicit recognition of Juan's importance

Black men within television shows and films are seen for their "material substance, [their]
imaginary fantasmatic qualities, [and their] "hardness."" (Walcott, 141) From the time they are born,
black boys are unfortunately seen as "disrespectful" or "deviant" when they are quiet or angry, yet
there is always a reason for this. A lot of children lash out due to problems at home, yet black boys
specifically are deemed violent. This is due to the notion that if they show emotions they aren't
"tough" enough and "one of the effects of [toughness] as the substance of a black manhood is the

intersectionality of one's identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of
humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age
film explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully
thought character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the
intricacies of the characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film's central point is
not to counter stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth.
Consequently, Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual
orientation. The first set of stereotypes that all the characters back are those associated with class.
Lower class people are often affiliated with little to no savings, renting properties, and living in the

Black Boys Look Blue, written by Tarell Alvin McCraney. This story follows Chiron Black in three
different phases of his life. This film highlights many of the things that plague black boys
questioning their identity, but does so in a way that captures the innocence and vulnerability of the
process. At first glance, one may think Moonlight is just another stereotypical coming of age story –
a young black boy with a drug addicted mother and no father, living in a neighborhood riddled with
drug addiction, who is confused about who he is. It does play into those stereotypes, but with good
reason. Those tropes highlight the contrasts between the life he is 'supposed' to live, and who he
really is (even if he doesn't realize it). In the beginning of the movie, Chiron (also known as 'Little'),
a stoic lonely boy, is being chased and taunted by a group of boys. He finds an abandoned house to

Chiron home to his worried mother Paula the next morning, and much to the displeasure of her,
takes Chiron under his wing. A few more intimate interactions between Juan and Chiron take place,
and they establish a very close bond, partly due to Paula's rapidly worsening addiction. The morning
after he realizes that his mother is addicted to drugs, Chiron rushes over to Juan's house. During the
very short conversation about the incident, Chiron randomly asks "What's a faggot?". Juan,
conflicted on how to respond eventually says "A faggot is... a word used to make gay people feel

In the movie Moonlight, written and directed by Berry Jenkins, follows an introverted black boy
named Chiron through three pivotal stages in his life as he struggles to come to term with his
sexuality. What made it even harder for Chiron was living in a drug–infested, poverty–stricken
environment filled with people who constantly remind him that he is "different." Throughout the
three stories Chiron gets bullied through his childhood and high school years, causing him to

In the opening scene of Part One, Chiron's childhood, there's a shot of "little" Chiron running as fast

circumstances.; However, when Juan catches Chiron's mother doing drugs, he loses his temper for

versions of Moonlight Sonata is actually a mash–up between the first movement and the popular
Broadway tune, Night and Day, written by Cole Porter in 1932. Overall, Night and Day is a love
song with a joyful spirit. It is full of amorous melodic phrases that add the sincerity of the romance
depicted in the lyrics, such as, "Night and day, you are the one. ..Whether near to me or far, It 's no
matter darling where you are, I think of you, Night and Day". The first movement of the Moonlight
Sonata can also be interpreted as filled with romance but unlike Night and Day, the romance is
accompanied with struggle. Liberace pairs this happy kind of love song, with a piano piece that has
dark, romantic qualities to create a sort or ultimate love piece that has both climatic love–filled
moments and low points of misery. Unlike Kempff, in his version of the Moonlight Sonata, Liberace
almost immediately pulls away from the original melody. In the sixth measure, right after Beethoven

Moonlight is a movie that follows the life of Chiron as he grows up. Starting from an abusive
childhood at his mother's house, and through his struggle filled highschool years, Chiron ultimately
ends up an independent adult. From the beginning of the film, Chiron face abuse at the hands of his
mother as well as from bullies at his school, which leads him to find Juan, who acts as a type of
mentor to him as he grows up. Juan's girlfriend Teresa also acts as a mentoring figure through
Chiron's youth and adult life, while Chiron's own mother slips into drug use and prostitution. In
Chiron's younger years, he befriends Kevin, who remains significant throughout the film as his love
interest. While in school, Chiron must battle with bullies, while growing up in a rough home
situation. This constant struggle for physical safety and well as safety in his sexuality causes high
tension throughout the film. As he discovers himself, Chiron looks to Juan and Teresa for guidance,
but eventually lashes out at the violent bullies in his life. The director of this film clearly presents an
idea of masculinity and how it especially is pertinent in context to the african american men in the
film. Growing up in his early days, Chiron does not have a male or fatherly figure in his life. The
director shows that Juan acts as a stand in for Chiron's father–like figure while protecting him from
the threats of bullies and his mother. Juan could represent a positive male presence since he

It's more than difficult living in a drug–plagued, impoverished community. These places are often
ignored, but shouldn't be forgotten in any capacity. The film Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins,
is meant to demonstrate the hardships of living in a difficult community. Thematically, it highlights
the already difficult nature of being black and poor in modern America, while simultaneously
showing the hardship of also being gay in said tough community. The film is comprised into three
acts surrounding the development of the protagonist, Chiron (in order of acts: Alex R. Hibbert,
Ashton Sanders, and Trevant Rhodes). Following him as he struggles with his own sexuality.
Consequentially, each act circles back to Chiron at a local beach, which for him, is a safe haven in a
typically hostile place. This beach signifies both hope for the marginalized, while commenting on
the unjust reality many Americans face daily. Essentially zooming in on what it means to be black,
poor, and gay in America.
In act one of Moonlight the protagonist, Chiron, is a child growing up in an impoverished
community with many obstacles in his way. It seems as if all odds are stacked against him, however,
after an encounter with a drug dealer named Juan (Mahershala Ali), his life finds a bit of meaning.
One day Juan takes Chiron to the beach, a place that seemed foreign to young Chiron. Nevertheless,
he embraced the water learning how to swim in the process. The use of both sound and mise–èn–
scene here introduces the idea that the beach is Chiron's safe space in his otherwise calamitous life.
For instance, as soon as the scene commences, the sound design increases and the music score
changes to an uplifting classical song. The way in which Chiron is addressed by Juan is also kind
and empowering. The blocking is also essential in this scene. At first, when Chiron is swimming,
Juan is holding on to him as he struggles to keep his head above the water. Eventually, Chiron
figures out how swim on his own, a powerful message captured in a short period of time. The music
puts the viewer in a state of relaxation, knowing Chiron has nothing to worry about in this moment.
This is also only the second time in the film where music is used, solidifying
