The first human cases were found in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Monkeypox virus (MPV,MPXV, or hMPXV) is a species of double-
stranded DNA virus which causes monkeypox in humans and other
animals.

The rash can be very itchy and
painful.

its own and lasts between 14 to
21 days.

❖ Most cases of the virus are
mild, sometimes resembling
chickenpox, and clear up on
their own within a few weeks.
❖ Monkeypox can sometimes be
more severe, however, and has
been reported to have caused
deaths in West Africa.

▪ Since 1970 there have been
sporadic outbreaks reported
across 10 African countries.
▪ In 2003 there was an
outbreak in the US, the
first time it had been seen
outside Africa. In 2017,
Nigeria saw the first
largest outbreak.

▪ To diagnose
monkeypox, your
healthcare provider
takes a tissue sample
from an open sore
(lesion).
▪ Then they send it to a
lab for (PCR) testing.

❖ There’s currently not an approved
antiviral treatment for monkeypox.
Antiviral drugs may help, but they
haven’t been studied as a treatment for
monkeypox.

Monkeypox is the latest global public
health threat. The cases of infection
are rising all over the world. But,
researchers say that it is highly
unlikely to turn into a pandemic.

• Avoid touching contaminated materials.
• Washing your hands frequently with
soap and water.
• Wear a mask when you are around
others.
• Clean and disinfect frequently
touched surfaces.

Monkeypox is the latest global health threat to be making
headlines. Everyday the rate of infection is increasing all
over the world.
But if we follow the guidelines of W.H.O. and other
healthcare guidelines and be aware of our surroundings
we can prevent monkeypox.
