This document discusses the importance of emotional intelligence for effective leadership. It argues that gifted leadership requires a balance of head and heart. Leaders must be attuned to their own and others' emotions to move people in a positive direction. Six leadership styles are identified, with visionary, coaching, affiliative and democratic styles being most effective as they create resonance. Developing emotional intelligence requires self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. Leaders must understand their real and ideal selves to develop a learning agenda and build new skills through practice and relationships.
