This document provides guidance on evaluating and treating exposures to macaque monkeys that may pose a risk of B virus infection. It outlines recommendations for wound cleansing, testing, antiviral prophylaxis and treatment based on factors like the type and condition of the monkey, nature and timeliness of wound treatment, and type of exposure. Deep wounds, exposures involving mucosa or needles used on ill macaques carry higher risk. Thorough wound cleansing within 5 minutes and antiviral drugs are recommended for higher risk exposures to prevent fatal B virus infection of the central nervous system.
