This presentation was shown at LTE World summit 2010 in Amsterdam illustrating Continuous Computing's LTE (Long Term Evolution) technologies and expertise. The presentation covers:
•Supporting early development of nontraditional products for use on LTE networks
•Building a broad ecosystem of devices in parallel with LTE deployment what should the role of the operator be?
•Removing business and technical barriers and defining new models to accelerate mass adoption of new services and devices
This represents the Conclusion part of final year course dedicated to M2M and Internet of Things, given in Supelec, one of Top engineering School in France.
There has been no shortage of edge computing activities during 2017, in both the telco and web-scale
domains. Several Tier One communication service providers (CSPs), including AT&T, China Mobile, and
Deutsche Telecom (DT), have announced that edge computing will be a key component of their future
network strategies and expect that several new use cases will be powered by edge servers. In the cloud
domain, Amazon, Facebook, and Google are pushing further toward the edge of their own networks, creating
more points of presence throughout the world. Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods in the United States
could also be interpreted as a first attempt to obtain real estate across the U.S. market that can be used
for Amazon’s edge servers. In fact, all major web-scale companies—Amazon, Google, and Microsoft—have
announced edge computing services that are driven by IoT use cases.

Global IoT Managed Services – Competitive IntelligenceNetscribes
The rising proliferation of connected devices has unleashed a new breed managed service providers (MSPs) that handle the end-to-end deployment of IoT solutions. Full-service IoT MSPs act as a one-stop-shop to meet the technology integration, connectivity, regulatory, and infrastructural needs of large-scale IoT implementations. Typical features of global IoT MSPs include pre-integrated IoT infrastructure, sales enablement plans, regulatory approvals, flexible pricing models, global core as a service, among others. The key factor differentiating global IoT managed service providers from other IoT platforms is their ability to provide a complete portfolio of networks and technologies for global coverage via a SPOC approach.
This report provides a detailed comparison of 11 global IoT MSPs and a look into other business models that exist in the IoT connectivity management market.

IoT is predicted to be the huge industry with billions connected devices and enormous volume of data generated. Even Big Data will not be big enough if it is not for IoT. Telecommunication industry is destined to play some role here and this role will certainly be opening the gates to the Internet for a massive number of sensors, objects and devices. However, it is expected that connection part of the IoT value chain would vary from 0 to mere 10 percent leaving the largest portion of created value to other industry players. CSPs are definitely in the show but are the last and the least in the guest list.
Not all opportunities gone, though, and some telecommunication majors transform the business and sophisticate the product lineups to capture more value going forward. There is still time for many CSPs to figure out how to take themselves from M2M mindset into the IoT paradigm through reimagining the business and building the ecosystem before the boat is missed altogether. Where trends are heading to, what products are first to be delivered and where in the value split CSPs can have more impact? I have shared my vision on this matter and would be grateful for receiving any of your thoughts too.
Thank you!

I presented at a recent sales conference for a large security / IT solution provider on the evolution of the telco industry and the role security and protection plays in that evolution.
In summary: customer data, trust, security and protection are critical for operators to get right in this emerging environment.
Operators need an integrated security and protection layer, not point solutions for each service as is the case today. Protection from malware across all network services e.g. IP, SMS, MMS, WAP push, widgets, apps, etc. Protection in the network, in devices and in services.
SDP vendors need integrated security solution across network, services and end-points, which means a partnership with security / IT providers is key. Its a rapidly growing problem as its a highly profitable and more importantly safe criminal business compared to drugs smuggling or prostitution; hence a specialist security/protection partner is essential.
Ericsson Distributed Cloud goes beyond NFV and Edge Computing. It brings to operators the best of telecom and cloud capabilities, placing the application where it’s needed the most (centrally, distributed or at the edge). It’s an open platform, with end-to-end orchestration, that allows operators to prepare their infrastructure to unlock at least 25% of the business potential of 5G use cases. Visit our page: www.ericsson.com/distributed-cloud
Requiring only half the bitrate of its predecessor, the new standard – HEVC or H.265 – will significantly reduce the need for bandwidth and expensive, limited spectrum. HEVC (H.265) will enable the launch of new video services and in particular ultra HD television (UHDTV).
State-of-the-art video compression techniques – HEVC/H.265 – can reduce the size of raw video by a factor of about 100 without any noticeable reduction in visual quality. With estimates indicating that compressed real-time video accounts for more than 50 percent of current network traffic, and this figure is set to rise to 90 percent within a few years, HEVC/H.265 will be a welcome relief for network operators.
New services, devices and changing viewing patterns are among the factors contributing to the growth in video traffic as people watch more and more traditional TV and video-streaming services on their mobile devices.
Ericsson has been heavily involved in the standardization of HEVC since it began in 2010, and this Ericsson Review article highlights some of the contributions that have led to the compression efficiency offered by HEVC.

Growth Codes: How do operators turn data growth into profitable revenue growth?Ericsson Slides
Growth Codes show how rethinking both mobile broadband and the role of operators can translate into profitable growth. Operators driven by bold, visionary and explorative mobile broadband strategies are turning data growth into revenue growth. These operators differentiate themselves by balancing superior network performance and an innovative go-to-market strategy. We believe the industry can learn from these examples and that more operators can find success by adapting some of their approaches to these codes.
A holistic approach to assessing the climate-positive effects of ICT.
A holistic methodology is necessary for assessing the potential reduction of CO2
e emissions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a well-established method and can be used for comparing emissions created in different scenarios. Standardized LCA methods can be used to identify solutions with the lowest CO2e emissions.
They provide society as a whole with the methods to assess a large number of possible solutions, to quantify the magnitude of potential reductions, and to show where these reductions could take place.

This paper looks at copyright, which is possibly one of the most controversial policy topics to have been talked about, lobbied and contested by various stakeholders for a very long time.
Some would say that the controversy already started at the very beginning of the birth of the world’s first copyright statute and it has never stopped since.
Skeptics on both sides of the debate would say that not much has really changed since the genesis of the controversy, as the debate has always come down to two things. The first is the tension between insiders benefiting from the prevailing copyright regime pushing back outsiders – in other words, the innovators who are barred from benefitting from the established status quo and are therefore demanding a change.
There will be more change in the next 10 years than there has been in the previous 100. This paper describes these expected foundational shifts and explains how we can manage them to our advantage.
In their latest discussion presentation "Winning the Game", Geoff Hollingworth, Ericsson North America Evangelist, in collaboration with Jason Hoffman, founder and CTO of Joyent, discuss what these changes will mean for devices, the cloud and the network.
This interactive presentation is supported by 8 videos. It describes the foundational changes that will occur across industries and networks, and attempts to explain how we can manage them to our advantage. The target audience of this paper is those who are involved in planning, building and profitably operating digital networks.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
