• It is the path drawn from one point to the next.
It’s like a dot that takes a walk.
• Lines are used to create shape, pattern, texture,
space, movement and optical illusion in design.
• A line can express moods and feelings
• Curves can take us slowly uphill, or turn sharply
twisting as they turn

• Born in the Netherlands (Holland) in 1872
• He was an art teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam
• Mondrian’s early paintings were of the world around him

• It remains unfinished as he died on

Art Activity
1. Use a ruler and pencil to draw straight lines on the page
2. Make a grid of eight lines across by six down
3. Create a pattern with 3 different sizes of shapes
4. Erase some lines to make small and large rectangles. Leave some squares too.
5. Put a small R for red, Y for yellow and B for blue where you want those colours
6. Do you still like the pattern you made? Change it if you need to.
7. Now add colour by using oil pastels or paint to colour in your shapes
8. Do the black lines last, after the paint has dried, or you’re done with the pastels
9. Go over the lines with a very thick black marker

Always go over the lines
last, and make them a
bit thick, to cover up
any mistakes

and glue them on after the

Use tissue paper
1. Follow steps #1 to #6 from the art activity on the previous slide for your rough copy
2. Cut up strips of black construction paper of equal length and width
3. Cut up the tissue paper one colour at a time and place it on top of your rough copy
4. If you want to change your pattern, do it now
5. Put glue on the back of the strips of black construction paper
6. Lay all of the horizontal, glued, black strips down on top of the tissue paper
7. Repeat step #6 for the vertical strips
Tip: use a ruler to guide you while gluing down the black strips so they are straight

like something specific. Abstract
artists felt that paintings did not
have to show only things that were
recognizable. In their paintings they
did not try to show people, animals,
or places exactly as they appeared
in the real world. They mainly used
color and shape in their paintings to
show emotions.
