This is the man who painted the picture. His name is Piet Mondrian.
Piet Mondrian  1872(Holland)-1944(New York City
 
He liked to use lines put together as squares and rectangles.
Placing these squares and lines on the canvas was very important to him.
He liked to use the colors red,yellow,blue,black and white.
Composition No. 8 1939-42
Mondrian started his own art style called De Stijl (The Style).  His artwork became more abstract and he limited his palette to primary colors. Composition with Large Blue Plane, Red, Black, Yellow, and Gray 1921
Mondrian grew up in an artistic family.  He enjoyed painting and went to art school in Amsterdam .  Gray Tree 1911
Mondrain enjoyed the artwork of the cubist painters such as Picasso and Braque.  Soon Mondrian’s artwork began to get more abstract. Ocean 5, 1915

Mondrian moved to New York City where he lived for the rest of his life. New York City 1941-42
Broadway Boogie Woogie  1943 Mondrian loved jazz music and would often listen to the music when he painted.
