Mohandas Gandhi was born in India in 1869 and studied law in London. In 1893, he traveled to South Africa to practice law but experienced racial discrimination and segregation. He decided to stay and fight discrimination through nonviolent protests for the next 21 years. Gandhi later returned to India and continued his nonviolent resistance campaigns, often fasting in protest and spending time in jail. His efforts were ultimately successful and India gained independence, with Gandhi becoming known as the father of India. Gandhi's ideas of nonviolent protest have since been widely adopted by other important leaders around the world.
