Gandhi was born in India to a Hindu family. He studied law in England and got his first job in South Africa, where he began fighting for the rights of Indians. He returned to India in 1915 wearing simple, white Indian clothes and fought for over 30 years for India's independence from Britain through nonviolent protest, which Nehru said would be seen as "the light of truth" for generations to come.
