                                             allow computer to communicate
                                             over a computer network.

 Enables the computer to access the
                                             network

                                              Wireless Network Interface

  • 1. [KPD 4046 TEACHING METHOD] HARDWARE REQUIREMENT Topic: 3.2 Hardware Requirements 3.2.1: Devices 3.2.1.2:Function of the devices needed in network communications Network Interface Card (NIC)  A Network Interface Card is a piece of computer hardware designed to allow computer to communicate over a computer network.  Enables the computer to access the network Wireless Network Interface Card (WNIC)  A Wireless Network Interface Card or WNIC is a network card which connects to a radio-based computer network.  A network card that provides wireless data transmission INTERNAL MODEM  A modem is a device that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines.  An internal modem only works in stand-alone computers. It is built into the computer.
  • 2. [KPD 4046 TEACHING METHOD] HARDWARE REQUIREMENT EXTERNAL MODEM  A modem is a device that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines.  An external modem is separated from the computer and is also mobile. SWITCH  A switch understands when two devices want to talk to each other, and gives them a switched connection.  A common connection point for devices in a network. HUB  Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN.  A hub contains multiple ports.
  • 3. [KPD 4046 TEACHING METHOD] HARDWARE REQUIREMENT ROUTER  A router is a communications device that connects multiple computers or other routers together and transmits data to the correct destination.  A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them. WIRELESS ACCESS POINT  A wireless access point is a device that connects wireless communication devices together to form a wireless network.  Connects to a wired network and can relay data between wireless devices and wired devices.
  • 4. [KPD 4046 TEACHING METHOD] HARDWARE REQUIREMENT Match the devices to their function correctly. NETWORK INTERFACE  A device that enables a computer CARD (NIC) to transmit data over telephone or cable lines.  Only works in stand-alone computers. It is built into the computer.  A device that enables a computer WIRELESS NETWORK to transmit data over telephone INTERFACE CARD or cable lines. (WNIC)  Separated from the computer and is also mobile.  A piece of computer hardware designed to allow computer to INTERNAL MODEM communicate over a computer network.  Enables the computer to access the network  A network card which connects to a radio-based computer network. EXTERNAL MODEM  Provides wireless data transmission
