CLIL UNIT PLAN
NAME: MERCÈ LARA CONTRERAS
SUBJECT: TECHNOLOGY
TITLE: AN ELECTRICITY ISSUE
YEAR: 2017
Step 1: The driving question.
Electricity is a basic consumer good but there are a lot of people that couldn’t
afford their electricity bill. Why is the electricity supply so expensive?
Step 2: The preview of the whole unit
1. Energy
2. Source of energy
3. Units of energy
4. Electrons
5. Atomic theory
6. Non-renewable energy
7. Renewable energy
8. Nuclear Energy
9. Heat Energy
10. Electrical magnitudes
11. Ohm’s law
12. Electric circuit
13. Battery
14. Switches
15. Wire
16. Symbols
17. Appliances
18. Energy bill
19. Energy Consumption
2. Why not CLIL?
2
Step 3: The easiest and hardest section of your unit.
The easiest part of my lesson is the first one: “Energy”. It’s a review of some concepts
such as Energy, Source of Energy, Why do we need Energy?....
The hardest section is the last one, “Energy consumption”. In this section, students
have to learn how an electricity generating company works, how governments control
the electricity supply, the energy bill and how to save up.
Step 4: Law aspects.
The LOMCE defines 7 competences:
Linguistic competence: Competition in communication language is the result
of communicative action within certain social practices, in which the individual
acts with other partners and through texts in multiple modalities, formats and
media.
Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology:
Mathematical competence involves the ability to apply mathematical reasoning
and Basic competences in science and technology are those that provide an
approach to the physical world and responsible interaction with
Digital competence: this competence involves the creative, critical and safe
use of information and communication technologies goals
Learning to learn: It means the ability to initiate, organize and persist in
learning.
Social and civic competences. The ability and capacity to use knowledge and
attitudes on society, to interpret phenomena and social problems.
Initiative and entrepreneurship. Promote the capacity of transforming ideas
into actions.
Cultural awareness and expression. This competition involves knowing and
understanding, with an open and respectful attitude the different cultural and
artistic manifestations
I will include these LOMCE standards in my unit plan:
Linguistic competence:
o Reading comprenhension, strategies for before, during and after the
reading or the audiovisual sequence.
o Writing and oral comunication. . Reading and writing about various
topics in different contexts.
o Search strategies and treatment of information for the construction of
knowledge
Basic competences in science and technology:
o Taking care of the environment, environmental impacts of human
activity.
o Describing natural phenomena
3. Why not CLIL?
3
o Analysis of technology everyday objects
o Natural resources: renewables and non-renewables
o Models of atomic structure
o Electrical current and effects, generation of electricity.
Digital competence:
o Digital media
o Sound and image edition software
o Information sources.
o Social networks
o Word processing software
o Presentations creating software
Learning to learn
o Understand the information that comes to us
o Critical thinking
o Creative thinking
Social and civic competences
o Training a discretion on relevant social problems to develop a critical
thinking
o Actively participate in projects to exercise rights, duties and
responsibilities of a democratic society
Step 5: Content
Which interdisciplinary subjects could be connected to in this unit? Why and
how?
This is a Technology unit, but could be connected with mathematics, natural science
and ethics. Mathematics is included in this unit because students have to calculate the
amount of an energy bill, every section and taxes. Natural science is included because
is necessary to understand the evolution of atomic structure, what an electron is, and
how electricity is generated. And regarding ethics, students have to think properly
about the social problem with electricity generating companies.
Steps 6: Soft Skills.
I will include these soft skills in my unit plan:
o Cooperative
o Critical observer
o Critical thinker
o Desire to learn
o Effective communicator
o Good at networking
