Capability
As design professionals MODE
are experienced in aligning
their core values with clients
sensibilities to inform the
process of place making,
regeneration and integration of
people and places into diverse
and viable environments.
MODE has been structured to enable the
development of expertise across a variety
of project sectors, including mining and
infrastructure, resorts and hospitality,
multi-unit residential, retirement communities,
educational facilities, defence projects,
industrial buildings, community and recreational
facilities, health and medical facilities,
correctional facilities, urban design and
master planning. The practice has evolved
simultaneously to include professionals from
similar disciplines to provide complementary
services across all sectors such as:
• Urban Design & Master Planning
• Architecture
• Interior Design
• Landscape
• Graphic Design
• Project Management
MODE are a design based collaborative practice
and value the input from clients, end users and
peers, implementing such engagement into the
design process. Working imaginatively within the
constraints of the brief and the budget; seeking
to value add to the end product. Recognising
the benefits of debate and review in the design
process, with the end goal of creating a
fit-for-purpose solution.
MODE staff have the capabilities and
resourcing capacity to be engaged across
all project stages from initiation through to
completion. Grounded in the fundamental
principles of socially conscious and economically
viable sustainable design, MODE implement their
knowledge and continual research into forward
thinking solutions.
MODE
“A manner, way, or method of
doing something, experiencing
something, or acting. A particular
form or kind.”
From the very first stages of design through
to project completion, MODE's work is
underwritten by the core values, derived from
the very definition of “mode” itself. Exploring
the three principles of Manner, Method and
Form, MODE ensure that each project is
undertaken with a clear, consistent and
cohesive approach. This allows MODE to
achieve a mutual vision of the client’s goals
and see this grow into something that
exceeds their expectations. It’s the MODE
way, made up of their own signature style,
which sets them apart and adds value into
the fundamentals of everything they do.
MANNER
MODE believe that a collaborative
approach is paramount to enable effective
communication throughout the project.
METHOD
As a multidisciplinary design practice,
MODE's process is solution-focused,
based on an innovative design-led approach
that is informed using best practice tools,
learned knowledge and research.
FORM
MODE's design outcomes are adaptive, flexible
solutions that meet clients needs and fulfill their
sustainable objectives. The overall form is, as
such, reflective of MODE's approach.
Innovation
Capitalisation™
Innovation Capitalisation™ by
MODE is a pivotal tool developed
to consider a project from the
outset before any design has
occurred. It aligns specialist
providers, groups, businesses
and government with the sole
purpose of creating better
communities through unique
and innovative design.
The four key pillars (social, economic,
environmental and educative) act as the drivers
for Innovation Capitalisation and is how MODE
unlock the ‘Capital in Reserve’ on each project.
MODE views Innovation Capitalisation as a new
procurement method, an opportunity to align
community needs with commercial outcomes
and place-making to bring people together. It is
about teaching people who aren’t just students,
supporting people who require extra help and
bringing minimum amenities to areas facing
isolation and dislocation. Innovation Capitalisation
works with clients to generate
the best possible outcome to engage
communities, activate spaces and build better
facilities that respond to the needs of real people.
5. How We Do It
IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES USING
INNOVATION CAPITALISATION™
MODE identify not only the expected outcomes
from a project, but also the underlying reasons
dictating the need for the project. This allows
for the identification of the ‘Capital in Reserve’
and employment of innovative approaches to
incorporate social and environmental solutions
to best deliver the client’s required outcomes.
EXPLORE IDEAS AND MEASURE AGAINST
THE FOUR PILLARS
From the identification of issues, MODE
comprehensively explore the opportunities from
the four pillars – economic, social, environmental
and educative – and determine how design
can best facilitate and maximise the benefits
associated with the project.
STRATEGISE THE DELIVERY
MODE has a wealth of best practice experience
and this, in conjunction with lateral thinking
expertise, is strategised to determine how the
opportunities can best be delivered. During this
phase MODE assess potential options available
to the client and where possible, quantify the
economic, social, environmental and educative
outcomes. This allows fully informed decisions to
be made regarding the best overall approach for
the project from an economic and society-wide
perspective.
QUANTIFY THE OUTCOMES AGAINST
IC’S FOUR PILLARS
As a final step, MODE quantify the potential
outcomes so that all benefits can be clearly
communicated to the client, the community
and potential partners. Experience has shown
that this can increase the number of willing
partners in a project and increase the returns for
each partner.
The possibilities of Innovation Capitalisation
are limitless and through ongoing research,
experience and knowledge, MODE will use
this innovative and unique design approach to
unlock more community-focused outcomes.
Pillars of Design
ECONOMIC
Understanding the principles of return on social,
environmental, personal and fiscal investment;
in conjunction with a complexity of factors
that stimulate benefits, such as employment
generation, community gain, alternative revenues
and financial models, affordability, overall value
for money and total cost of ownership.
SOCIAL
Passionate about problem solving, MODE
openly partner and collaborate to innovate and
generate positive outcomes for the broader
communities and societies.
ENVIRONMENTAL
MODE are conscious of where people live, play
and work. Through the application of innovative
design techniques, all MODE projects minimise
negative impacts on the environment and create
opportunity for environmental wellbeing, to
leave the world in better health.
EDUCATIVE
Committed to maintaining the benefits of social,
economic and environmental achievements,
MODE work actively towards closing the learning
cycle, believing that the built environment
has the capacity to enhance all our lives and
contribute to who we are.

MODE have over 30 years’
experience in master planning
and urban design. Their success
is largely due to their ability
to listen to what clients want,
update their knowledge on
future technology and social
changes and design to meet the
needs of communities around
Australia and internationally,
now and in the future.
The art of master planning cities, urban
infill, open space networks and commercial
complexes is founded on the dynamics of
understanding communities and people as
individuals. MODE’s urban designers unify the
urban form, environment, circulation of multi-
modal transport and service infrastructure
with a sense of the individual to create
site responsive designs that are tailored to
the commercial outcomes of clients and
the policies of regulatory authorities.
The multidisciplinary team at MODE
develop master plans that set realistic
principles for a project. They work through
a consultative process that considers
budgets, whole of life costs, function,
appeal and marketability to conclusively
achieve the project's intended outcome.

MODE's landscape architects
are driven to create memorable
outdoor spaces that enliven,
enhance and engage people
of all ages.
MODE's inclusion of landscape design in the early
phases of projects, results in dynamic integration
between the built and natural environments in
all designs. Extensive site analysis, research and
effective community consultation is conducted in
order to understand the unique aspects of a place.
MODE’s multidisciplinary organisations ensure
projects are integrated and well considered. Their
project range include resorts, recreation, urban
environments, streetscapes, educational play
spaces and commercial plazas. Recent successful
projects include an array of water parks, landscape
surrounds in housing estates, rooftop and vertical
gardens for affordable housing ventures and
school grounds for the university, high school and
primary school communities around Australia.
MODE create spaces that surprise and delight.

perception and decision making.
MODE's interior design team deliver inspirational
and individualised solutions, custom tailored to
the clients’ agenda and program requirements.
Each project is designed with close attention
to detail that responds to the individual

First impressions can make
or break the way in which a
company or organisation is
perceived. MODE’s graphic design
team specialise in capturing a
client’s product, service, goals,
values and/or message and
translating this into a visual
solution that best represents
the client’s desired image.
Whether they are revising an existing package or
starting fresh, it is their goal to achieve a robust
corporate identity that maintains connectivity
and consistency across all areas of the business.
In developing the client’s corporate identity,
MODE create a solution that will give clients a
competitive edge, raise their visibility, appeal to
their intended audience and ultimately add value
to their company.
MODE believe it is important to work
collaboratively with clients to understand their
short and long term business goals, ensuring the
graphic package produced will remain relevant
and future-proof.

17. MODE places significant
importance on the integration of
environmental design principles
in residential developments, from
high density urban buildings to
domestic houses.
MODE promotes social and cultural interaction
in its residential developments, containing
well-designed spaces for the community. Their
designs strike a balance between standard
solutions, which can be implemented in a cost
effective way, and careful attention to detail
ensuring each project has its own identity that
responds to its surrounding context and the
framework of existing built environments. Their
projects achieve climatically responsive design
solutions and continually strive for outcomes
with high amenity for residents.
MODE have been working with public and private
housing companies over the past ten years to
design and deliver affordable housing in central
locations. They believe architecture and design
have a crucial role to play in the pursuit of inclusive
and integrated neighbourhoods, designed for
social, economic and physical sustainability.
MODE's designs strike a balance between
standard solutions which can be rolled out
in a cost effective way and the individualisation
of dwellings to reduce the ‘mass produced’
look which can plague some affordable housing
projects. They strive to blend affordable
housing projects in with the surrounding
streetscape, helping residents feel part of
the existing community.

19. Commercial architecture deals
specifically with the public realm
and the design of buildings and
places within it. This genre of
architecture and urban design is
focused on combining function
with style to meet the needs of a
wide range of business types and
operational models.
MODE work with a variety of clients to produce
exceptional outcomes in retail projects of all
scales to maximise return on prime retail space
through collaboration, experience, knowledge
and authority. They focus on maximising spatial
qualities through economics, efficiency and
clever design solutions.
MODE's team of designers has extensive and
intimate knowledge of new and traditional retail
and entertainment facilities, as well as a variety
of procurement processes. They have worked
with national retailers, shopping centre owners,
specialty shop operators, large format retailers
and developers of master planned sites for
stakeholders. They are industry leaders as a result
of their dedication to research and development
in many aspects of retail architecture, design,
development and procurement.
Remote and regional areas present specific
challenges in terms of climate and weather
extremes, accessibility, serviceability and
infrastructure availability. MODE understand
the issues faced in developing projects in
these areas and have established a philosophy
of design for remote areas that focuses on
simplifying the construction process to make the
most of limited resources.
MODE remains dedicated to developing quality
communities and infrastructure for regional areas.

community commitment policy
which enables them, as designers,
to provide services back to
community based organisations,
including councils, to generate
memorable and inspiring spaces
through good design, which
contribute to the lives and
experiences of the users.
Public and community projects require a
fundamental understanding of the collaborative
and consultative approach to project delivery.
MODE are well versed in working with multiple
stakeholders and client representatives, being
able to distil the key outcomes that will fully
address the client’s program, functional and
aspirational requirements. They design their
projects to allow for flexibility and adaptability in
their use, as community expectations and needs
will change over the life of the buildings.
MODE have delivered multiple projects across
Australia working with local government and
community based organisations. These projects
cover a broad spectrum of building types
including public squares and plazas, sporting
facilities, community centres, child care centres
and recreational facilities.
MODE are strongly committed to delivering
quality projects for Indigenous communities
and have been involved in health, housing
and community developments ranging from
single and group housing, health clinics and
rehabilitation facilities in Aboriginal, Torres Strait
and other Islander communities throughout the
Pacific since 1994.
MODE designs for remote and Indigenous users
are based on many years’ experience designing
for tropical and inland arid conditions. They
incorporate climatically responsive techniques
aimed to withstand harsh weather conditions

23. MODE brings a wealth of
experience to the primary,
secondary and tertiary
educational sectors, as well as
extensive experience working
in the creation of public and
community buildings.
Design for education requires an understanding
not only of the functional and technical
requirements of facility users, but also an
understanding of the governance models of
teaching/learning and the regime of facilities
maintenance and management, as well as other
technical demands placed on facilities.
Having worked with a wide variety of public and
private institutions throughout Australia, MODE
understands that all projects present different
challenges for education focused design. As
a result of this experience, MODE found that
new paradigms in the educational space are a
response to several critical pressures for change
in the community – namely a growing awareness
that conventional modes of teaching are simply
not meeting the needs of all students.
As a reflection of this research, MODE's design
approach is to encourage enquiry based
learning, collaborative project based learning,
and innovative approaches to the curriculum.
The new educational space is polyvalent: open,
multi-share, adaptable, informal, has great
variety in size; indeed is more like the workplace.
New models of educational delivery are
characterised by a number of ideas, principles
and strategies including personalisation, small
learning communities, block scheduling, co-
operative learning, project based curricula,
peer tutoring and instruction, team teaching,
integration of wireless technology for anytime,
anywhere learning, and community involvement
in education.

of healthcare, laboratory, dental and clinical
education facilities. With a commitment to
providing innovative and responsive design
consultancy services, MODE ensure client
expectations are always met and regularly
exceeded. Working in close partnership with
clients and end users, MODE's designs result
in state-of-the-art facilities that incorporate
the latest technologies and equipment to
ensure best-practice procedures and work
flows are implemented.
MODE understand that a fundamental step
in producing the best design outcome is
identifying the key working relationships
required to improve interaction between
various functions of a facility, ensuring the
most efficient work flows possible. MODE are
strongly committed to creating non-institutional
environments that assist in patient recovery
and stimulate positive environments. Their
comprehensive understanding of healthcare
design leads to in-built flexibility of rooms and
spaces to accommodate future changes in
population, demographics, epidemiology,
service provision and available technologies.

27. MODE has over 20 years of
extensive experience in the
conservation of historic buildings
and sites of cultural significance.
Conservation is an important part of the
long-term management of places of cultural
significance and requires a good understanding
of traditional materials and techniques to ensure
the best solution is adopted. MODE’s experience
includes the conservation of places of cultural
significance from early buildings to more recent
places such as the many military sites that
remain from the 1940's.
In the process of conservation management,
MODE produce a Heritage Management Plan
to assist in the protection and management
of heritage values which is used to inform
decisions during strategic and master planning,
redevelopment, conservation and adaptive reuse.
The document identifies the significance of a
site, outlines policies aimed at the long-term
conservation of heritage values and provides
helpful and practical advice and guidance to
various user groups involved in the management
of heritage sites.

29. Creating atmosphere is perhaps
the most vital design aspect in
hospitality and tourism projects.
Patrons remember a hotel, a
bar, or a restaurant not only by
the quality of food and service
offerings, but also the feelings,
emotions and moods evoked at
the time.
MODE’s experience with the design of short-
term accommodation and hospitality venues is
extensive. They have worked with a wide range
of international operators and have experience in
delivering all classes and grades of hotels, resorts,
bars and restaurants. This has given them a
thorough appreciation of design priorities,
space allocations, building fabric affordability
and service and equipment installations.
MODE believe ‘smart’ design approaches
benefit clients. Using cost controlled planning
and a sophisticated design methodology to
produce a built environment, MODE exceed
expectations based on cost and provide
a competitive product within the market.
MODE’s design teams have a clear
understanding of the proposed operational
systems and the level of service to be provided.
This determines critical space provisions for
front-of-house and back-of-house areas, as well
as for the accommodation components within
hotels and motels.

experience working on projects
within the secure environment
sector which encompasses
correctional centres, youth
detention/training centres and
holding centres.
MODE are able to draw on this vast amount of
knowledge and specialist skillset in order to
value add to clients’ law and order practices.
MODE pioneered the early Australian BOOT
(Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer) scheme
correctional centres in Victoria, New South
Wales and Queensland. MODE’s skillsets have
evolved through informed research and sound
evidence based design. As a result of this, they
are able to provide a variety of project delivery
methods, including principal design consultants,
design and construct contracts, through to
large-scale Public-Private-Partnership (PPP)
delivery models and government advisory roles.
To ensure correctional facilities are successful,
detainees should possess greater interpersonal,
vocational and/or employment potential skills
to eradicate or minimise recidivism. Whilst this
outcome is the responsibility of the operator, its
achievement is reliant on the provision of a well-
designed secure environment.
MODE have developed an expertise in the design
and procurement of police stations, control
rooms and holding cells. Through working on
secure environments MODE have developed
an understanding of the need for adequate
separation of spaces while maintaining high
levels of surveillance and safety. These buildings
display the public face of law and order and as
such need to display a confident and secure

35. The key role that infrastructure
plays in maintaining and
developing economic capacity
has come to the forefront of
national strategic thinking in
recent years.
The development of water, energy, transport and
IT infrastructure has become a national priority,
while defence infrastructure continues to be
a key element in the development of regional
Australia and an important means of developing
closer ties with regional neighbours.
MODE have long recognised the importance
of strong infrastructure systems in delivering
sustainable, productive and liveable
communities. They have been involved in the
development of rail, port and airport facilities
throughout Australia and understand the
value these projects deliver to the broader
development of cities and regions.
MODE are also proud of their involvement with
the development and upgrading of defence
facilities throughout the country. The scale
and complexity of these projects cannot be
underestimated, and the difficulties working
with secure and operational facilities are well
understood by MODE.
While MODE recognise the effects and
benefits of well-considered outcomes, they
acknowledge that there is no single solution
to designing successful infrastructure
developments. What works in one location, in
one market or partnership, does not necessarily
work in another. An alignment of vision and
understanding through collaboration with all
stakeholders and end users is paramount to the
design process.
