IE School of Architecture and Design places emphasis on design, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.
Students are encouraged to take a creative approach to architecture, think critically when confronted
with a challenge and not be afraid to think outside the traditional boundaries of architecture and design.
Diversity among our students and faculty, who come to us from all over the world, creates a rich blend of
cultures and a broad learning experience. Graduates can aspire to work all over the globe and are able to
consider the world as their town.
Our programs integrate the following four dimensions:
about ie school
of architecture and design
IE School of Architecture and Design offers the following programs:
• Vibrant Design Culture. The highest quality
design education is the backbone of our
School. We engage experienced, top architects
and designers who are committed to teaching,
as well as successful in their professional
careers.
• Lecture Series. Our special guest lecturers
provide direct contact with leading
international professionals. By sharing their
experiences and engaging in open dialog,
our students are able to directly benefit from
theses expert’s knowledge and understanding
of the field.
• The real world. Whether through blended
courses that allow students to work and study
at the same time, or our internship program,
IE always seeks to relate what is learned in the
classroom to the real world.
• Become a design entrepreneur. Design,
management and visual and verbal
communications skills are essential for today’s
professionals. Knowing how to run your
own office, lead projects and teams or be an
effective part of an organization all depend on
knowledge, skills and a compelling vision.

6. 6 ie master in architectural management & design
a word of welcome
Dear prospective student,
Throughout the history of architecture there has
been a general consensus that the best designs
are those created by artists who are not bound by
the financial constraints of business.
Contemporary architecture has proven, however,
that excellence of design, although necessary,
is not quite enough to ensure success. Most
architects are entrepreneurs and vocational
designers who need a specific management
toolkit to build the career they want. In response
to this scenario, IE School of Architecture &
Designhas launched the Master in Architectural
Management and Design, in collaboration with
IE Business School, to bridge the gap between
advanced design and business management in
the Architecture, Engineering and Construction
(AEC) field. The result is a program that
addresses the design implications of business
decisions and vice versa.
Located in Madrid, IE Business School is
considered one of the world´s leading business
schools by international press such as Financial
Times, The Economist and Wall Street Journal.
Renowned for its marked focus on the
entrepreneurial spirit and its humanistic
approach, IE’s world-class faculty is comprised
of entrepreneurs, executives, academic experts
and authors published in top journals. Many of
these professors have held executive positions
in start-up companies or multinationals. They
bring intellectual diversity and practical insights
straight to the classroom to create rich and
challenging programs.
Based in Segovia and Madrid, IE School of
Architecture & Design is a stand-alone extension
of the highly successful IE Business School
model to the world of design. As a result of the
collaboration between these two institutions,
the Master in Architectural Management
and Design offers key differentiating factors,
providing a unique environment to analyze and
reflect on contemporary design, coupled with the
entrepreneurial and management knowledge
needed for success in the AEC field.
It is therefore our pleasure to invite you to
explore this prospectus and apply to join this
groundbreaking program.
Warmest regards,
Juan Lago-Novás, PhD.

IE Master in Architectural Management and Design
8. 8 ie master in architectural management & design
quick facts about MAMD
The idea that cutting-edge design can only come
from architects who remain untouched by the
constraints of business or finance is now obsolete.
In fact, contemporary practice has shown that
although excellence of design is necessary for
success, it is by no means the only requirement.
Business acumen and management know-
how now play a key role in the success of an
architectural practice. The Master in Architectural
Management and Design bridges the gap between
advanced design and the management skills
that are essential to succeed in the Architecture,
Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry today.
The program is designed to cover the specific needs
of professionals who already have a sound working
knowledge of theoretical and applied principles, and
now wish to acquire and apply business expertise
in the field of AEC. It is a fact that today the
majority of architects are freelance professionals,
entrepreneurs and vocational designers, who face
business responsibilities without adequate tools
and training. This program addresses the design
implications of business decisions and vice versa.
Furthermore, students can expect to develop their
interpersonal skills through hands-on practice and
extensive teamwork.

AS AN ENTREPRENEUR I
— Entrepreneurial Management
— Personal Strategy
— Design and Business
Communication
Since its inception, IE Business
School has embraced the
entrepreneurial spirit as a core value,
and is now an international reference
in the field of entrepreneurship.
In fact, the School itself was
founded by entrepreneurs, and the
entrepreneurial spirit is an integral
part of its day-to-day fabric. In this
first module, students will learn how
to develop a compelling business
model. They are encouraged to come
up with new venture ideas, form
teams with colleagues and spend
several months developing business
models that are “investor ready.” For
many, the culmination of this exercise
is a reality check of their business
models, for others it is the beginning
of turning these ideas into their
future entrepreneurial ventures.
MODULE 2
THE AEC PROFESSIONAL
AS A MANAGER I
— Financial Planning
— Economic Environment
— Strategy Fundamentals
— Marketing Fundamentals
This module will provide students
with foundation in general
management which helps them
build a solid foundation for the in-
depth exploration of an organization
as a whole, not just as a sum of its
parts. Most areas of management
are studies using practical cases,
which deal with real or fictional
problems that may arise in
different company contexts, and are
analyzed from global or national
perspectives.
MODULE 3
THE AEC PROFESSIONAL
AS A DESIGNER
— Introduction to Design
Management
— Strategic Design
— Cost Control Design
— Marketing and Design
— Computational Design
— Building Information Management
The third module addresses how
design decisions have business
implications and vice-versa. It also
provides advanced design skills and
state-of-the-art software knowledge
to be applied in a multidisciplinary
integrated practice. In London, as
part of the Architects Backstage
series, students will have lectures
with architects representing top
practices such as Foster and
Partners, AHR-Global, Chipperfield,
OMA, Rogers Stirk Harbour and
Partners, GENSLER and Zaha
Hadid Architects. Each one of these
practices excels in coupling their
management and design strategies
and will share with students their
experience in the back office work
needed to achieve outstanding design.

— Venture Lab
The program culminates with
the Venture Lab, which allows
students to conceptualize their own
architectural businesses through
a business plan that integrates
all their recently acquired
management and design skills. As
opposed to the standard practice of
judging purely design and technical
excellence, the Venture Lab will

aspects such as marketing, finance,
strategy, etc.
