The German Team in Year 5 created a program for the Riley Rover robot using a colour sensor and loop block to search for colors around a room. They tested how far the colour sensor could be from the floor to still work properly. In a competition to find 3 pieces of a given color within a 1 square meter area, they programmed the robot to perform different actions depending on what color it detected using a "What if" block. They used a symbol to represent no detected color to keep the robot from falling off a table. While testing the program, the robot did fall because not all angles could be covered. They evaluated their teamwork positively.
1. ERASMUS Mindstorms
Activity 4
NAME: German Team
GRADE: Year 5
DIFFICULTY FROM 1 TO 10: 4
Scenario. Working with the Riley Rover which has been already built adding the colour
sensor. Using block loop to keep on looking for colours. What if block.
How far is the colour sensor from the floor? 0,5 cm
Would it work if it is further away? No
Use the colour sensor and the loop block to keep on
looking for a given colour around the room.
1 square meter competition
3 pieces of a given colour in 1 square meter. How
long does it take to your robot to find the three of
them?
What if block. Choose what your robot does in both
Cases.
Case 1.
Case 2.
Which symbol do we have for “no colour”?
Use the symbol so that the robot does no fall down
from a table. Try out the program and say if the
robot finally falls down. Why?
Finally evaluate your team work and say why.
Yes,it fallsdownbecause there are
some angleswhichcannot be
covered.
Challenge
Try to have your robotsayingthe colourthat it discovers
