The narrator witnesses a boy named Jack being bullied by other students in the school canteen. When the narrator confronts Jack, notorious school bully John attacks both of them. A fight ensues where the narrator kicks John in self defense but suffers an ankle injury. Jack alerts the principal and police, who arrest John. The narrator reflects on saving Jack from the bully but getting injured in the process.

1. CA1 Composition
I was so hungry, I could eat a horse. I began thinking of food –
burgers, French toasts and chicken rice. My train of thoughts was
interrupted as a group of students ran out of the school canteen where
I was headed to. They were yelling at some poor bespectacled boy. I
pushed through the crowd surrounding the boy whose face was so
pale it looked as if he had just returned from hell. “What happened?” I
asked the boy.
Twenty students started talking all at once. “Hold up!” I shouted.
“I asked the boy, not the rest of you.” Sensing that I was all worked
up now, the students hurriedly rushed off to their usual activities. The
boy could not hold back his tears any longer, and tears streamed down
his face as he headed towards the General Office, jostling anyone who
got into his way. I was discombobulated and befuddled by the boy’s
actions. He obviously needed help with something, although he
refused to tell me.
“Hey,” I called out, grabbing one of his shoulders. He flinched
back in shock and surprise. I frowned. What is wrong with this boy?
A shadow loomed over me and I turned around. My eyes widened in
surprise as they collided with a pair of narrowly slit eyes which
belonged to John, the school’s most notorious bully. John ran past me
like a bullet and pinned the boy on the ground. Words like fire-arrows
came shooting out of John’s mouth as he spoke to the boy. “Jack, you
think telling the teachers is going to solve your problem? You’re
wrong. You humiliated once, and I’m not going to let you off that
easily: Especially when you attempted to report me to the principal!”
John yelled.
A derogatory voice – which belonged to one of John’s
henchmen – came from behind John’s back, yelling in agreement. I
could not stand seeing Jack get bullied, so I ended up doing the most
foolish thing – I retorted. Terror gripped my whole being as John

2. pulled me by my collar, lifting me up. I began to choke, but managed
to get out, “You’re the coward, John. You’re running away from
reality. You’re afraid of getting punished.”
While John prepared to strike a stinging blow that would have
knocked me out, I landed a desperate kick in his groin. This was
enough to make him double over in pain and let go of me at the same
time. I dropped to the floor like a rag doll, my ankle making a
sickening “crunch” that made my stomach churn when I landed on the
ground. Pain erupted in me as I tried to move towards Jack, who had
frozen in shock as he watched the fight along with John’s henchmen.
“Go,” I mouthed to Jack. Fortunately, Jack understood and took off.
John regained his footing and brandished a penknife from his
pocket. My life flashed before my eyes. Surely he was not going to
kill me? However, the crazy light in John’s eyes did not exactly
assure me. John slashed out, and I cried out in pain as a trickle of
blood flowed down my chest. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jack
and the principal talking to a few policemen. He must have notified
them! Immediately, I was filled with gratitude towards Jack. He ran
towards John and me and gestured for the policemen to follow. Soon,
the policemen were less than a metre away from John when they
yelled, “Freeze! Drop your weapon and put your hands above your
head where I can see them!”
The noise in the canteen was instantaneously replaced by an
eerie silence as the men in blue placed handcuffs around John’s wrists.
This was like something out of a crime show. The policemen notified
the paramedics and they arrived in mere minutes. Then the police
took John to the police station with them. At first, I felt sorry for John.
Then, remembering what he did to me, my expression hardened and I
told myself that he deserved it.

3. As the paramedics tended to my wound, I reflected on my
actions that day. I had gotten myself injured, but managed to save
Jack at the same time.
After a few days, I expressed my gratitude towards Jack by
giving him a new computer game. I learnt from him that John went to
juvenile court and had gotten expelled from school, all because of me.
But that would do him a world of good and give him a chance to start
afresh.
