My attack on Singapore was a bluff – that
had worked. I needed the surrender of the
British to be at once, because I was
outnumbered. If the British ever found out
about our numerical weakness, we would be
doomed, and would be forced into
disastrous street fighting. I didn’t want to
lose anymore men.
