Global Classrooms Mock Conference
December 12-13, 2017
What is a Mock Conference?
A Mock Conference consists of three types of debate that mimic the work of the
United Nations General Assembly. Our Conference will consist of Opening
Speeches (formal, given in the front of the room), Moderated Caucus (speaking
from your chairs), and Unmoderated Caucus (informal, walking around to chat
with other delegates). Our goal at the end of the Conference will be to begin
talking with others about possible resolutions or solutions to our topic: protecting
the rights of migrants.
What should I bring?
 Paper for taking notes, pens, pencils, etc.
 A placard with your country’s name clearly written
 A copy of your Opening Speech
 A copy of your PositionPaper thus far (Introduction, Body I, Body II)
 A sheet of relevant research/facts about your country that you can use to
help you during debate
 Snacks/Drinks for break time
What should I wear?
UN Conferences require that students dress more formally than usual. You are
aiming to dress in businesslike, professional clothing. A helpful way to think about
this is to imagine yourself as a lawyer arguing a case in court. How would you
dress? You should look polished and dignified, not as if you are about to go to a
party or dance. (This doesn’t require you to buy new clothing! Do the best you can
with what you already have at home!)
How will I be graded?
You will be graded on your participation AND behavior. Remaining quiet and
respectful while others are speaking is equally as important as the content of your
speeches. Evaluators will be looking at your use of English (speaking Spanish
should be avoided), preparedness, the number of times you’ve spoken, your
willingness to work with others, your expression of a clear position, and of course,
your behavior. ALL grades will count toward the second evaluation!
Goals:
 Learn more about our topic: protecting the rights of migrants
 Collaborate with other countries that may not have the same exact position as
yours in order to brainstorm solutions.
 Feel more comfortable speaking publically in English.
 Have fun and relax!
