GSM and GPRS were early cellular network technologies that enabled low data connectivity to mobile phones. GSM connects phones by having them search for nearby cell towers, while GPRS allowed for packet-based data charging and basic internet access. GPRS provided faster data speeds than previous technologies and allowed connecting phone networks to external data networks like the internet. However, data rates were still relatively low, ranging from 56-114kbps for GPRS. Newer technologies like 3G and 4G have provided significantly higher speed mobile connectivity.
