NFC allows contactless data exchange between devices in close proximity. It operates in both active and passive modes, with one device transmitting and the other receiving. NFC technology is being developed worldwide for uses like mobile payments, access to transportation and facilities, and managing food orders. Another similar but lower-cost technology is ZigBee, which is intended for small, low-power wireless networks transmitting small packets of information reliably and securely.
