OS & UPCOMING MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES
WHAT IS MOBILE OS
A mobile operating system, also referred to as mobile OS
 It‟s is the operating system that operates a Smartphone
 Modern mobile operating systems combine the features
of a personal computer operating system with touch
screen, cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, ,voice recorder
,music player, Near field communication etc

PRESENT AVAILABLE OS IN MARKET
BlackBerry OS from RIM
 Android from Google
 iOS from Apple
 Symbian OS from Nokia and Accenture
 Windows Phone from Microsoft

UPCOMING MOBILE OS
Ubuntu
 Tizen
 Firefox OS
 Jolla Sailfish
 Aliyun
 Open WebOS

UBUNTU FEATURES
a completely new mobile OS with button-less, gesturebased user interface
 Swipe the screen from the edge and the UI effortlessly
shows up app controls, notifications and lets users
switch between apps. This is also known as Edge
Magic.
 Ubuntu being run perfectly on Samsung Galaxy Nexus

TIZEN
Tizen is a free and open source Mobile Operating
system based on Linux.
 There are rumours that Samsung is planning a
version of Galaxy S3 phone based on Tizen instead
of Android.
 Tizen's software framework for developers is based
on web standards such as HTML5 and web

FIREFOX OS
The platform is built on Mozilla‟s “Boot to Gecko
project” is a true open source Mobile OS
 The platform is optimized for entry-level smartphones and does not include any unnecessary
middle-ware layers
 Device manufacturers like TCL Communication
Technology and ZTE have also announced their
intentions to manufacture devices featuring the new
Firefox OS, using Snapdragon™ processors from
Qualcomm.

ALIYUN
Aliyun is a Linux based Mobile OS developed by
AliCloud.
 It has a great potential to replace Android in China
atleast, as it provides better services in terms of maps,
gmail and searches in China as compared to Google and
would be a good alternative to costly iOS based devices.

JOLLA OS
Jolla OS is a Linux-based mobile operating
system developed by Jolla
 Jolla OS has a proprietary user interface developed
by Jolla that will set it apart from the other available
mobile OS
 and it has the capability to run android apps
 Jolla has plans to come out with smart-phones
based on Jolla OS by the end of this year or early
next year.

OPEN WEBOS
Open WebOS is a mobile operating system based
on a Linux kernel, it was open sourced recently by
HP
 Developers still believed that WebOS handles
multi-tasking significantly better than any other
embedded OS
 No products planned with the Open webOS but we
might see devices running on Open webOS in time
to come.

UPCOMING TECHNOLOGIES
flexible screens
 Cloud storage
 Near Field Communications (NFC)
 Infra red Keyboard
 Sixth Sense
 Bluetooth 4.0
 Gorilla glass 3
 Wireless charging or Inductive charging

FLEXIBLE SCREENS
Bendy phones sound like science fiction – but the
far-out gadgets could be on sale in just a few
months‟ time. Both Samsung and Nokia are working
on the technology
 Yi said that the first devices to ship with flexible
screens would be phones. Other possible
applications include „foldable‟ iPad-style tablets

CLOUD STORAGE
In this coming future Smartphone is becoming
smarter and the storage capacity of these devices
being increasing to store more data
 Today 64 GB capacity mobile are not enough for our
daily use to fulfill this requirement
 mobile companies are working on the use of “Cloud
computing” technology in mobile.
 Microsoft Office Web Apps is embedded in Live and
hotmail is just good enough for online typing.

NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATIONS (NFC)
NFC technology allows commercial transactions to
be done wirelessly through mobile devices, without
the need for data cards
 The phone can be paired (read placed close to
each other) or tap products, in order to transfer files
 Near Field Communications has been implemented
in a number of Google's Android based
smartphones

HOLOGRAPHIC DISPLAY AND INFRA RED
KEYBOARD
Infrared keyboards should help smartphone users
type and interact with much larger and friendly
keyboard.
 With this technology the phone projects a virtual
keyboard on a surface before the user who then
enters data as if he were using a laptop keyboard.

SIXTH SENSE
The ability to use gestures to manipulate all sorts of
daily activities, read information from the internet,
and even project information on the wall, can be
mind boggling.
 Imagine using your hands to read bar codes or
even take pictures anywhere in the street or house

BLUETOOTH 4
The headline feature of the latest Bluetooth 4
release is low energy (LE) operation, which allows
a mobile handset to talk to a wide range of lowpower peripherals and sensors
 It will enable new mobile accessories and business
models, many of which will use the mobile device
as a channel to communicate with cloud services

LTE(LONG-TERM EVOLUTION)
LTE is a next-generation cellular wireless
technology that pushes peak theoretical speeds to
hundreds of megabits per second and reduces
latency
 LTE will be adopted by code division multiple
access (CDMA) and Global System for Mobile
Communications (GSM) network operators.

WIRELESS CHARGING OR INDUCTIVE
CHARGING
Inductive charging uses an electromagnetic field to
transfer energy between two objects
 Energy is sent through an inductive coupling to an
electrical device, which can then use that energy to
charge batteries or run the device.
 Companies are also working on wireless charging
technology which is today only available in Nokia
Lumia 920

PROS & CONS OF WIRELESS CHARGING
pros
Lower risk of electrical shock
 Convenience
Cons
 More costly
 Slower charging
 Lower efficiency, waste heat

GORILLA GLASS 3
It isNative Damage Resistance
 Its 20% more powerful than gorilla glass 2
 In Gorilla Glass 3, the scientists went to the atomic
structure of the glass to fundamentally improve the
way the glass responds to an impact or scratch.
