INTRODUCTION
 Mobile number portability (mnp) enables mobile users
to retain their mobile number when changing from one
mobile network operator to another.
 In the absence of mnp, customers have to give up their
number and must adopt a new one when they switch
operators.
HISTORY
 First started in Singapore in 1997
 Followed by Hong Kong
 Mobile number portability launched in India in Haryana
state on 25 November 2010.
 It was finally launched all over India on 20th January
2011.
TYPES OF MNP
 OPERATOR PORTABILITY
 LOCATION PORTABILITY
 SERVICE PORTABILITY
OPERATOR PORTABILITY
 This is the ability of A subscriber to retain within
the same service area, an existing telephone
number even if they change from one service
provider/operator to another.
LOCATION PORTABILITY
 Location portability is the ability of a subscriber to
retain an existing telephone number when changing
from one physical location to another.
SERVICE PORTABILITY
 Service portability is the ability of a subscriber to
retain the existing telephone number when
changing from one service to another service.
PROCEDURE
 Obtain 'unique porting code' by sending A SMS from the
mobile number you want to port to the number '1900' with
text 'PORT' followed by space followed by your 10 digit
mobile number you want to port.
 Fill up the caf and porting form.
 Submit the duly filled porting form and caf along with
requisite documentary proof of the mobile service
provider.
 If you are A post paid subscriber, submit A paid copy of
the last bill issued along with the porting form and CAF.
 Obtain new sim card from the new service provider.
BENEFITS
 Affordable
 Efficient
 Fast
 Easy to use
 More investment in the market
LIMITATIONS
 You are eligible to make A porting request if you have an
active connection that is at least 90 days old.
 You still have to go to the service provider’s store.
 The entire process of porting takes approximately 6 days.
The exceptions are the states of J&K, Assam & the north
eastern regions where it takes 10 days from the receipt of
porting clearance to the donor operator.
CONCLUSION
 MNP saves the porting users from number changing
which is a great advantage. If the users are not satisfied
with their present network service to switch to any other
networks. However, the users are supposed to buy a new
scheme from the new network provider.
 Mnp creates competition among the different mobile
networks.
 To be successful in the competitive telecommunications
environment, carriers have to carefully analyze their
network, call and data schemes, administrative
infrastructures and select the best mnp solution.
