KOKL Vision
Vision: Kua O Ka Lā (KOKL) has adopted
the concept of Ke Ala Pono -
The Right Path - to describe our goal of
nurturing and developing our youth. We
believe that every individual has a unique
potential and that it is our responsibility to
help our students learn to work together
within the local community to create a future
that is pono - right.
KOKL Mission
To provide Ka Pae 'Aina o Hawaii with the
knowledge and skills, through Hawaiian
values and place-based educational
opportunities, that prepare receptive,
responsive, and self-sustaining individuals
that live "ke ala pono" (positive pilina 'aina,
pilina kanaka, and pilina 'uhane).
KOKL Purpose
KOKL offers a specialized program which
provide student with solid core curriculum
combined with Native Hawaiian cultural and
value based approach to education.
From the early morning wehena chants to
the closing circle in the afternoon, Kua O Ka
Lā students are encouraged to walk
“Ke Ala Pono - the right path.”

● Mahalo i ka mea loaʻa
● Kūlia i ka nuʻu
Communication is the KEY to understanding.
Parent kuleana:
● Honor all expectations and commitments above
● Attend conferences and parent workshops on your childʻs progress
● Support your childʻs daily success by providing needed time, space and
supplies for completing any work and/or forms sent home
● Provide input and feedback on overall well-being of your child as
necessary
● Join a committee and/or volunteer with various tasks and kuleana at KOKL
● A family must complete kōkua hours (4 per quarter for a total of 16), your
childʻs admission in the following school year is contingent upon the
completion of these hours!)
Hīpuʻu History
● Initial Program Implementation 2011-12 SY
● Approximately 40 students, with students on campus
taking one or more courses (Hilo, Pūʻalaʻa)
● Miloliʻi Hīpuʻu 2012-13 SY (~50 students Hilo, Miloliʻi,
Naʻalehu, Pūʻalaʻa)
● 2013-2014 (~90 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, SPACE,
Pūʻalaʻa)
● 2014-2015 (~70 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, Waikōloa,
Honokaʻa, Pūʻalaʻa)
● 2015-2016 (~30 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, Pūʻalaʻa)

WASC Major Recommendations
• The Administration clearly define each of its leadership roles, including job
descriptions and titles, so that all stakeholders understand the kuleana of
each school administrator, and so that administrators are empowered to fully
exercise their kuleana for the improvement of the entire school organization
• The Administration and faculty work to clearly articulate the K-12 curriculum
so that it aligns with the mission and vision of the school, specifically to
integrate the “knowledge and skills,” with “Hawaiian values and place-based
educational opportunities.”
• The Administration find ways to support teachers in analyzing and
triangulating summative, qualitative and formative data to strengthen
professional decision making, and inform instruction in order to make the
program adjustments needed to meet the diverse needs of the learners being
served.
● The Governing Board, HOS, and Administration proceed with the
implementation of the 15-year Master Plan, including the certified kitchen
and upgraded internet connectivity which will contribute to the financial
sustainability, health and wellness priorities and facilitate culinary and
cultural activities and instruction.

● Hilo Boys and Girls Club: Mon, Tues, Thurs
from 8:00-2:00, Wed. 8-1230 closed Fri.

  • 3. KOKL Vision Vision: Kua O Ka Lā (KOKL) has adopted the concept of Ke Ala Pono - The Right Path - to describe our goal of nurturing and developing our youth. We believe that every individual has a unique potential and that it is our responsibility to help our students learn to work together within the local community to create a future that is pono - right.

KOKL Mission To provide Ka Pae 'Aina o Hawaii with the knowledge and skills, through Hawaiian values and place-based educational opportunities, that prepare receptive, responsive, and self-sustaining individuals that live "ke ala pono" (positive pilina 'aina, pilina kanaka, and pilina 'uhane).
  • 5. KOKL Purpose KOKL offers a specialized program which provide student with solid core curriculum combined with Native Hawaiian cultural and value based approach to education. From the early morning wehena chants to the closing circle in the afternoon, Kua O Ka Lā students are encouraged to walk “Ke Ala Pono - the right path.”

Parent kuleana: ● Honor all expectations and commitments above ● Attend conferences and parent workshops on your childʻs progress ● Support your childʻs daily success by providing needed time, space and supplies for completing any work and/or forms sent home ● Provide input and feedback on overall well-being of your child as necessary ● Join a committee and/or volunteer with various tasks and kuleana at KOKL ● A family must complete kōkua hours (4 per quarter for a total of 16), your childʻs admission in the following school year is contingent upon the completion of these hours!)

Hīpuʻu History ● Initial Program Implementation 2011-12 SY ● Approximately 40 students, with students on campus taking one or more courses (Hilo, Pūʻalaʻa) ● Miloliʻi Hīpuʻu 2012-13 SY (~50 students Hilo, Miloliʻi, Naʻalehu, Pūʻalaʻa) ● 2013-2014 (~90 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, SPACE, Pūʻalaʻa) ● 2014-2015 (~70 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, Waikōloa, Honokaʻa, Pūʻalaʻa) ● 2015-2016 (~30 students, Hilo, Miloliʻi, Pūʻalaʻa)

  • 9. WASC Accreditation ●2014-2015 ●WASC Accredited K-12 Hawaiian Focus Public Charter School ●Awarded 6 years with a 2 day follow up visitation in 3 years
  • 10. WASC Major Recommendations • The Administration clearly define each of its leadership roles, including job descriptions and titles, so that all stakeholders understand the kuleana of each school administrator, and so that administrators are empowered to fully exercise their kuleana for the improvement of the entire school organization • The Administration and faculty work to clearly articulate the K-12 curriculum so that it aligns with the mission and vision of the school, specifically to integrate the “knowledge and skills,” with “Hawaiian values and place-based educational opportunities.” • The Administration find ways to support teachers in analyzing and triangulating summative, qualitative and formative data to strengthen professional decision making, and inform instruction in order to make the program adjustments needed to meet the diverse needs of the learners being served. ● The Governing Board, HOS, and Administration proceed with the implementation of the 15-year Master Plan, including the certified kitchen and upgraded internet connectivity which will contribute to the financial sustainability, health and wellness priorities and facilitate culinary and cultural activities and instruction.

(Uncle Myles, Aunty Tuʻu) ● Hīpuʻu Calendar - list of field trips for the year, any additional field trip that may come up will be communicated via the Newsletter.
