 Wilderness Enhanced Behavioural Support(WEBS): my brief was to create a program which would support
high school students considered by the schools to be ‘at-risk’ of not completing high school, or who had
significant behaviourally challenging behaviours. The program devised was based across two educational
districts with one staff member supporting each district. The high schools in that district each received six
months of intensive support, through analysis of school systems, subject choices, staff competence and
expertise, and levels of parental support. Each high school put forward a number of students they
considered to be ‘at-risk’ which were then supported over that six month period. Not only were the
students supported but so were their teachers (with significant amounts of money available for
professional development and in-service work), their parents (with a series of parent support network
meetings), and the administration (with systems analyses, behavioural consequence evaluations, subject
offerings, etc). A staff member in each school was identified who was considered to be ‘significant’ – they
had good relational qualities, identified with the students, was likely to be part of the school for a few
years and who was also willing to commit to not only supporting the students but willing to participate in
the nine-day wilderness experience which formed an integral part of the whole program. This nine-day
program was based around an expedition in one of south-east Queenslands’ most isolated National Parks,
Sundown National Park south of Stanthorpe. The nine boys carried all the necessary equipment for the
nine days because there was very limited access to the park and its environs. The two WEBS teachers
accompanied each trip. The three months leading up to the expedition was spent in learning aboutthe
boys and who was likely to most benefit from the experience, and the three months following were spent
cementing the learning’s from the expedition as well as gradually handing over the support to the
significant staff member.

The program devised was based across two educational districts with one staff member supporting each district. The high schools in that district each received six months of intensive support, through analysis of school systems, subject choices, staff competence and expertise, and levels of parental support. Each high school put forward a number of students they considered to be ‘at-risk’ which were then supported over that six month period. Not only were the students supported but so were their teachers (with significant amounts of money available for professional development and in-service work), their parents (with a series of parent support network meetings), and the administration (with systems analyses, behavioural consequence evaluations, subject offerings, etc). A staff member in each school was identified who was considered to be ‘significant’ – they had good relational qualities, identified with the students, was likely to be part of the school for a few years and who was also willing to commit to not only supporting the students but willing to participate in the nine-day wilderness experience which formed an integral part of the whole program. This nine-day program was based around an expedition in one of south-east Queenslands’ most isolated National Parks, Sundown National Park south of Stanthorpe. The nine boys carried all the necessary equipment for the nine days because there was very limited access to the park and its environs. The two WEBS teachers accompanied each trip. The three months leading up to the expedition was spent in learning aboutthe boys and who was likely to most benefit from the experience, and the three months following were spent cementing the learning’s from the expedition as well as gradually handing over the support to the significant staff member.  Risk management, litigation research and equipment purchasefor the WEBS program July – Sept ’97 Metropolitan West Regional Office, Limestone Hill Support Centre,Ipswich, Queensland 4305  Assistant to the Interim Operational Group guidingthe Strategic Planningprocess,Metropolitan West Region Supportive School Environment scan investigating“Best practice”in all schools in theMetropolitan West Region to providea range of supportstructures at all levels of schoolingfor students at-risk.
