Mise en scene is a French term referring to everything visually presented in front of the camera. It uses five key elements - settings and props, costume/hair/makeup, facial expressions and body language, lighting and color, and character positioning - to provide the audience with information about characters, their relationships, and the society, culture, and time period of a film through visual means.
