This document discusses various aspects of mise-en-scene that will be considered for an upcoming romantic comedy trailer. It notes that the trailer will film scenes in a bedroom, shopping center, park, and coffee shop. Props like phones and a hairbrush will be needed. The main character Riven will have messy hair and clothes in early scenes and later get dressed up. Both main characters will exhibit happy facial expressions and natural body language throughout most of the trailer. High key lighting and bright colors will be used to match the romantic comedy genre. Characters will generally be positioned in centered medium and close-up shots.

2. Settings/Props
 Setting and location play an important part in trailer and film. They are not just the
“backgrounds”.
 Sets are either built or filmed in a real place
 Props are used in everything – this can be as small as a piece of paper
How does this relate to the trailer?
1. In the trailer we plan to film in the bedroom of the protagonist, a busy shopping
centre, in a park and a coffee shop. We will need to do further research into setting
and location to find out precisely which location/s we will be filming in.
2. Props are just as important. In some scenes we will need the characters phones –
especially Riven as she will be playing music. Also a brush for her to sing into.

3. Costume, Hair and Makeup
 Costume, hair and makeup play a major role in the trailer and film because they instantly indicate the
personality of the characters. It also tells us whether the film is set in present time, future or past.
How does this relate to the trailer?
1. During the trailer we will film parts where Riven is dressed as a “messy” teenage girl. She will have her
hair messy and unbrushed for the first part of the trailer.
2. She will have a makeover and after this, makeup will be done neatly and she will be dressed eloquently.
3. She will be wearing a jumper and coat for the outside scenes – this will be due to the weather (if it
doesn’t fit correctly with what weather we would like).
4. Riven will also be wearing a bathrobe during the trailer when she is with her best friend Clancy.
5. For most of the trailer Riven will have her hair down – straightened.

4. Costume, hair and makeup
How does this relate to the trailer?
1. For the trailer Gray will have his hair mainly just natural.
2. Gray may have his eyebrows filled in to make them dark –
rather than this he will not be wearing any makeup.
3. He will have jeans and a hoodie on for most of the scenes.
4. He will have a coat on if there is an issue with the weather.

5. Facial Expressions and Body Language
 Facial expressions indicate the way that a character is feeling
 If someone is smiling broadly then we assume that they are super happy.
How does this relate to the trailer?
1. Most of the trailer will be happy and joyful as it is a romantic comedy
2. Facial expressions for Riven – mainly happy however one or two scenes maybe
upsetting.
3. Facial expressions for Gray – mainly happy too because he’s in love with Riven
4. Body language for both characters will be natural, a kissing scene is the only
seductive type however most is clean and cut.

6. Lighting and colour:
 Throughout the entire trailer we aim to film in high key lighting. This is
because most romantic comedies are done in high key lighting and it’s
important for this as it suggests the way that characters will be feeling
and there is a pathetic fallacy created. This also makes audiences feel
similar to the characters and there is a relatability of characters and
audiences.
 There will be bright colours within the trailer and we do not want any
dull parts as it doesn’t create and make the audience feel comfortable
and feel like it is a romantic comedy.

7. Positioning of characters in the frame:
 During the trailer most of the shots will be medium close up’s, close up’s, long
shots. Characters will be positioned centred as much as possible however there
will be scenes where the characters are put to one side – this may be due to
further emphasis on the location or something else in the frame.
 Characters may be positioned somewhere unexpected because it will create a
bigger effect if it is different. Riven will mainly be central because she is the central
character of the trailer.
 Positioning of characters is important because it shows the emphasis of certain
characters more obvious and the relationship between the characters – whether
they like each other or dislike each other.
