 Giving and receiving feedback is critical to
communication in the military setting.
 Subordinates are less likely to follow the
commands of a leader who doesn’t give
adequate feedback.
“the frequency and quality of feedback has
been tied to better work relationships and
productivity” (Connaughton, Shuffler, &
Goodwin, 2011)
 Feedback shouldn’t always be negative
◦ We all like to hear “good job” or “thank you”
every so often
What can be done to improve
communication in the military setting when
it comes to the process of giving and
receiving feedback?
 After-action reports
 Follow up communication tactics
 Media to convey messages
 Need to be used more often
◦ Currently only used after major events
 Deployments
 Training missions
◦ Should be used on a weekly basis
 Everyone should file an AAR
◦ Allows leaders to see differences between lower enlisted
and upper enlisted
 Constant communication during missions
◦ Rather than reporting in when the mission is
complete
 Could prevent problems from occurring
 Reduce amount of time needed to solve problem
 Video Conferencing
◦ Reduces amount of uncertainty about
commands from officers
◦ Allows for direct questions and answers from
person giving the command mission
 Communication is key to effective
leadership, while feedback is key to
effective communication.
 Proper communication in the battle field
can mean the difference in life and death
of our troops.
 Connaughton, S., Shuffler, M., & Goodwin, G. F. (2011).
