Intimate technology - the battle for our body and behaviourKarlos Svoboda
This essay aims to spark a wave of public and political debate about a series of new products already showered out over you, the volume of which will continue to increase during the coming years. This essay takes a serious look at the trend that technology is rapidly nesting itself in between us, very close to us and even within us, increasingly coming to know us and even receiving human traits. In short, we have become human-machine mixtures, cyborgs.

Program of the 4th Perso-Indica conference, CEIAS, Paris (France), 8-9 Decemb...Encyclopaedia Iranica
On the occasion of the 4th international conference of the Perso-Indica project (http://www.perso-indica.net/), we would like to consider our main object of research—the Persian translations and original works bearing on Indic cultures—in a wider perspective than has generally been the case. We aim to do so by comparing the Indo-Persian movement of translation that took place in the subcontinent from the 13th century onwards with other processes of translations operating primarily from and to non-Muslim languages (e.g. Greek, Syriac, Pehlevi, Sanskrit into Arabic, etc.; Arabic into Latin; Greek into Ottoman Turkish, etc.) and, secondarily, between different languages of Muslim societies (e. g. Arabic into Persian, Turkish, Malay, Sub-Saharan languages, etc.; Persian into Urdu, Turkish, Malay, etc.). We have therefore invited contributions bearing on such movements of translation in different regions of the Muslim world between the 7th and 19th centuries, and highlighting the ways in which each specific translation process articulated the relation between source, “bridge” and target languages.
Presentation by Dr. Linda Rush on the topic of Challening the advanced learner given as part of the ADIBF Academy Certificate Future Proof Teacher 2015.
As a teacher, headteacher, university academic, educational consultant and researcher Dr Linda Rush worked with a wide range of learners in a wide variety of contexts. Her research in the areas of teacher education and public / private partnerships has led to presentation at international conferences and publication in books and journals. More recently in her role as Director of Teacher Training for GEMS Education, a vital part for her is to explore the concept of a ‘global’ and ‘state of the art’ UAE based Teacher Training Institute. The overarching intention of the Institute will be to change the way teacher education meets the future; to foster interdisciplinary, integrated thinking and innovative leadership; to engage fully in the global community; and to facilitate lifelong learning. To this end, GEMS Education is looking to working with national and international outstanding universities to develop challenging programmes of global teacher education.

Presentation by Kassem Al Tarras from the Syrian ISBN Agency and Syrian Publishers Association on the topic of ISBN. What is it and why do we need it.
Arabic e-books are getting ever more present in the world of publishing; this is the future, and it starts now. However, things get more complicated without a clear identification. We have more Arabic e-books but less metadata. The key metadata element is the ISBN. Give your e-book an ISBN and let it be seen everywhere.
Kassem Al Tarras has been a bookseller for 25 years, and is the director of Pioneers (Al Rowad) Publishers since 2005. He is also the director of the ISBN Agency in Syria

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

58. Unique Opportunities and Challenge
Opportunities:
- To collect difficult-to-find materials
- Old, rare, unique materials
- Develop relationships with scholars
and booksellers – different in the
Middle East
- Provides access to tips on materials
that others might overlook
- Make the university library a
repository for ephemera (bulletins,
posters, calendars, material on local
initiatives) which is critical to scholars
Challenges:
- Determining what is available
- Few websites and searchable catalogs
- Various, inconsistent levels of physical
processing, descriptive cataloging or full
MARC records
- Postage and freight charges can be
prohibitive
- Online capabilities dependent upon the
region
- Payment options : wire transfers. EFT
- Print based, Ebooks not yet major factor
- Language expertise – selector and
processing staff
- Cooperative technical processing to
handle language deficiencies, particularly
related to cataloging. If we’re going to
select something how are we going to
process?

65. Whether mainstream or not, we still strive to following these
guiding principles
• Respond to the needs of various stakeholders (selectors, cataloging, vendors, users, public services, business services, IT)
• Define formal and informal lines of communication
• Commit necessary resources to end workarounds
• Take advantage of existing strengths
• Bring everyone up to the same level of understanding of processes (e.g. technology, new developments in publishing, distribution,
local procedures, etc.)
• Bring old procedures up to date vis-à-vis current technology
• Adequate time and staffing dedicated to problem solving
• Eliminate unnecessary steps & handoffs in workflows
• Define goals for optimal throughput times for process
• Promote better communication with relevant selectors and curators to increase awareness of cataloging and acquisitions options for
these collections in order to work together to expedite faculty, student and researcher discovery, access and use of these resources
• Develop processes for improvement of workflows for non-mainstream international acquisitions and adjust in response to changing
requirements to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency
• Provide a service point for selectors, curators, staff, and faculty in the library and on the campus for issues directly related to foreign
and non-Latin materials
• Provide consultation services related to acquisitions, discovery, description and delivery of non-mainstream international resources,
material and collections including published materials as well as manuscript, special collections and ephemera
• International Team to serve as the UCLA Library’s expert team related to non-mainstream international collections.
66. Selector contacts in region are extremely important
• These contacts can prove invaluable to
selectors when responding to research needs of
the faculty, graduate students and researchers
73. International Acquisitions yield unique and valuable collections. The process can
be as routine as having choices of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream. But
from the Middle East it is more like rocky road!
