Course Introduction:
How are our individual choices shaped by society? How do our choices help shape society? These are two primary questions we will address in this Introduction course to the Study of Sociology. Sociologists explore practically all aspects of social relations. What is society and how does it shape individuals’ lives? Why do people behave as they do; and what they can do to more effectively take charge of their lives? This course is designed to offer insights to understand how social forces in society shape our behavior and influence our life experiences. Considerably, we are the product of our society and vice versa. Our identities, hopes, fears, grievances, and satisfactions are shaped by the culture and social structure that surrounds us.
This course is designed to help students learn the basic theoretical principles, terminology, concepts, and methodologies used within the discipline of sociology. Additionally, it will introduce the student to basic sociological areas of inquiry, such as socialization, group dynamics, gender, social stratification, inequality, social class, deviance, social institutions, and the micro and macro sociological analysis. Students will apply sociological concepts, methodologies, and theories to understand how social influences affect their lives, and will develop a greater understan.
The goal of the Reflection paper is for you to (hopefully) .docxAASTHA76
The goal of the Reflection paper is for you to (hopefully) find something- anything- that was
helpful, interesting, or relevant to you in this class. We've all had classes that we felt were a total
waste of time and we didn't learn anything or they were completely irrelevant to our lives. I hope
that this was not one of those classes. That's where the Reflection paper comes in!
Think about something you learned in this class- it could be how important effective and efficient
communication is; it could be how to recognize a stroke; it could be the features of a stutter;
ANYTHING! You can write broadly about the class in general, or you could get very specific. It
can be something related to your major, your future career, something current, or your life in the
future. I just want to know how or what you can take away from this class so that you know it
wasn't a waste of time. So much of what we have learned this semester will be relevant in your
lives at some point or another (i.e. stroke, dementia, the communication model, etc.). So,
whether you're a Business major, a Nursing major, an Engineering major, or a SLHS major, you
can think back to this class and recall something helpful in the future!
This paper should be from your personal perspective, so you can write in the first person (use I,
me, etc). It's informal, so you do not have to have any outside sources unless you want to
incorporate them. IF YOU DO, then cite them in APA format. I repeat- you do not need to have
any outside sources, but if you give a definition, a statistic, a specific detail, then you do have
cite that information.
The page limit is 1 pg. Depending on how much you want to say, you can double space it or
single space it, 11-12pt font. If you just loved the class that much, you can write a bit over 1
page. But try not to go over 2. Don't forget a TITLE and your name!
Communication Policy:
I have a 24-hour return email policy, excluding weekends. This means that if you email me Monday-Friday (Friday before 5pm), I will do my best to return your email within 24 hours. If you email me on a Friday after 5pm or on a weekend, it may take until Monday for me to respond. Emails must be addressed respectfully- this is not an instant message or a text. This means use an appropriate greeting (Good Morning, Hello, etc.) and an appropriate close (Thank you for helping, Regards, etc.). Check the syllabus before you send an email about class policy or assignments. I will not respond to emails when the answer is clearly available on the syllabus.
Course Overview:
The course is designed to introduce students to typical communicative processes and to disorders of communication through the lenses of assessment and intervention. The course provides an overview of typical speech, language, and hearing development across the lifespan as well as disorders of speech, language, and hearing as seen in children and adults. Multicultural issues, as well as .

Test Taking
Dr. Carolyn D. Corliss
Certain specifications should be outlined when professors prepare a test so
that they are relevant to the instruction. First, professors should use test and
assessment specification as a guide. Simply put, the conditions of the test and
assessment should describe the performance needed to be measured along
with what learning outcomes to measure. Second, each test item and
assessment task should be written so the task to be performed is clearly
defined, and it measures the performance described in the intended learning
outcome. If a test is written with clarity and simplicity, avoiding unnecessary
wording, then the students will have an easier time taking it. Third, keeping the
reading difficulty and vocabulary level simple will prevent distorted results.
Students should be measured on the performance determined, not by some
factor that was not designed to measure. (Miller, Linn, & Gronlund, 2009).
Students should be knowledgeable on what to do and what not to do when
preparing and taking a test. Preparations for the test can entail many
dimensions, including: maintaining good study habits, completing and
submitting assignments on time while having a clear understanding of the work
expected of you, and contacting the professor if you need any additional help or
clarification. Getting a good night’s sleep and eating breakfast before a test will
help you stay focused (Tennessee Department of Education, 2010). Also, as a
part of preparation, do not cram for the test. You have to start by planning
ahead and deciding not only is this is something you need to do, but must do in
order to achieve the results you anticipate. Make sure that you have everything
you need for the test, i.e. computer, good test taking environment, and minimal
distractions. Always make sure to read the directions and questions carefully
so you know what is expected from you. Finally, when you have selected all
your responses/answers, do not submit it without going back and reviewing
your answers and proofing what you have written. (TeacherVision, 2010).

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
