Water access and quality are issues in the Philippines, with only 60% of Metro Manila's population served. Water purification began with treatment plants and expanded to include privatization and intensive clean water campaigns starting in the last 20 years. Bottled water use has risen with sophisticated purification technology and marketing, making some brands much more expensive. Water refilling stations can be a good source of safe drinking water if their multi-stage purification processes including filtration, softening, and disinfection are closely monitored to prevent contamination.
