DME, also known as dimethyl ether, is a colorless, gaseous ether with the chemical formula (CH3OCH3). It was originally developed as a replacement for CFCs to decrease greenhouse gases. DME is non-toxic and biodegradable. It can be made from methanol, coal, LPG, natural gas, or biomass, and has potential future uses as an aerosol spray propellant, solvent, and raw material for chemical products.
