Mentoring Leaders For
Tomorrow
The majority our business leaders are ill-equipped to lead
their organizations leading to low rates of engagement
Most of our future leaders learn through example (in
other words, their immediate bosses)
BUT only 50% of leaders feel that they are capable to
lead their teams (Gartner, 2019)
AND only 10% are natural born leaders (Inc., 2019)

With rates of employee engagement consistently at low levels,
change is an imperative
So What?
What do
you do?
If this is the case, what is an aspirational leader to do?
• Will taking an MBA make me a better leader?
• If I read more books on leadership, will it improve my chances?
• If I listen to podcasts and other online content, will it help?
• If I spend $100,000s on Leadership Development courses will
this help?
Yes & No
HBR (2017) found that leaders who are both results-
driven and build an engaged, fun-to-work with team are
the most effective
AND High-Performance Companies are 11% more
PROFITABLE (Gallup, Dec 2019)
Achieving this balance isn’t easy, it takes practice!
Mentorship
• A more experienced individual challenges a less experienced individual to develop their
skills and push their abilities to further their career and/or their business
• A mutually respectful & trusting relationship where a sense of nurturing & feedback takes
place through ongoing, direct communication
• Over 30 years of physcological research paints a clear picture: done right, mentorship
positvely impacts mentees, mentors and their organizations or businesses
(Managing Americans, 2012)
Why Mentorship?
• Mentorship isn't on-the-job training
• Mentorship is about trust,
empathy, connection and courage
• The last element is the courage to be REAL
• Everyone has the opportunity for mentorship;
you don't have to go it alone
• Many at the top of their game have benefited
from mentorship for years
• BUT many of us simply don't know a) that
mentors exist and genuinely want to help or
b) where to find a mentor
How?
• Mentorship! Real-world Challenge!
• BUT I don't know WHO to talk to
• I can't talk to my peers because I
am worried about exposing my
flaws
• I can't talk to HR because they
represent the company and NOT
my interests
• I haven't established a strong
network & don't have anyone I
can look up to or trust (trust is a
BIG thing)
