Urban violence has significantly reduced in Sao Paulo, Brazil between 2000-2010. Homicide rates dropped by 78% during this period. Key factors contributing to this decline include strict enforcement of gun control policies that resulted in over 200,000 illegal guns being seized, demographic changes with a decreasing youth population, increased and improved community policing, and greater investments in violence prevention programs focused on high-risk areas. The combination of restricting gun access and improved social policies helped end the epidemic of violence in Sao Paulo.
