What: Following the 2007/2008 post-election violence a situational
analysis was conducted to investigate why large numbers of youths
were involved in the violence.
Findings: a majority of youths felt frustrated due to lack of
opportunities to nurture / showcase talent and an overwhelming
feeling of hopelessness in finding a secure livelihood.
Intervention: The talent academy was established with the vision to
train, nurture and showcase youth talent in sports and performing
arts.

It seeks to supplement in the deficit model of
Education-what learners cannot do and focuses on
what they are able to do.

Approximately 3000 youth directly trained and 12000 reached through regional centers
Outcomes
Pilot has informed policy reform in Education (talent stream adopted) & now incorporated in NESP( 2014-2018), national youth policy and manifesto; establishment on the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) under MOSCA, Development of the sports Act-2013.

Start small , model then replicate success- (NYTA reach was only 100 youth in March 2010

Government ownership of process ,lessons & re-alignments-UNICEF technical lead and support.
Impact
Anchored in Policy: Education Act 2013 and Sports Act 2013- In 2014 the Kenya Academy of Sports was formally launched to oversee the development of sports talent-potential of reaching 47 Counties with increased opportunities for in and out of school adolescents.
