The impact of OTT TV services and the quest for a ‘better TV’ experience.
The arrival of interactive OTT (over-the-top) TV platforms is opening up direct, non-traditional routes to market for brands, rights owners, content publishers and production companies, and with the consumer firmly in the driving seat, the issue of consumer choice of TV services is the competitive motivator now at the heart of business strategy for both incumbent Pay TV operators and the new breed of consumer –facing content aggregators entering the market.
The clash of competing mind-sets is going to be intriguing as broadcast and Internet businesses build new services on the centre ground of hybrid TV delivery of consumer entertainment, anytime, anywhere the viewer wants to access it. The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. 2
Economic Change
There is currently a shortage of television and video content, due to reduced spending by
procuring entities, especially Government institutions that are major consumers of media
content.
Social Change
Just like global audiences, Botswana audiences are also consuming digital video
content on mobile and social media.
The behavioural change for audiences is that IPTV and VOD platforms allow them
to search for the content they want at their convenience. Whereas traditional
television on the other hand broadcast content according to its programming
schedule.
Technological Change
Digital migration (the migration of analogue television broadcast services to digital
terrestrial television) in Botswana was not successfully implemented, resulting in a
shortage of set-top boxes in the market.
Botswana is now implementing an analogue switch-off (discontinuing the
broadcast of analogue television), therefore some people are unable to receive
digital signals from the state broadcaster (Botswana television).
An opportunity for emerging business models that include over-the-top (OTT) and
video-on-demand (VOD) services created by the analogue switch-off.
Environmental Change
COVID-19 restrictions have altered how people interact with each other, therefore the use
of virtual communications technology has been adopted for meetings and seminars.
Legislative Change
Botswana, also facing challenges related to transparency, privacy, fake news, and
data security. However, some legislative frameworks are in place e.g. Data
Protection Act, 2018, Communications Regulatory Act, 2012 (CRA).
3. 3
(ii) PORTER’s FIVE FORCES MODEL
Threat to new entrants
Capital requirements: establishing a television channel either a terrestrial channel
or an online one requires a huge capital investment.
Regulation of the industry by the Botswana Communications and Regulatory
Authority (BOCRA), reduces the number of new entrants (barrier to entry).
Brand loyalty: audiences take a long time to be loyal to a new television channel
unless it offers appealing content.
Bargaining power of suppliers
Content creators and distributors have bargaining power over their content
(intellectual property), therefore they can set their pricing models.
Bargaining power of buyers (Audiences)
Audiences choose the type of content they want to watch, at their preferred time on their
preferred distribution channel.
Threat of substitute products & services
Audiences have the propensity to only watch content that is appealing to them. The
appeal of such content is normally based on creative aspects, production quality and
production techniques used in its execution.
Rivalry among existing competitions
Due to the availability of digital channels as an additional distribution channel for media
content, some content creators prefer to distribute their content via their preferred
channels.
4. 4
4.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL HELP THE BUSINESS
Disruptive Technology: Data Analytics
The integration of data analytics tools into the company’s Customer Relationship Management
(CRM) system will allow for the analysis of consumer/user data that is collected during the
authenticating sign-in to the IPTV and VOD portal.
All in all data analytics will help transform the IPTV and VOD users’ experience and at the same
time unlock commercial opportunities across the business value chain.
5.0 IDENTIFICATION OF THE BARRIERS THAT WILL BE PRESENTED WITH THE USE OF
THE SELECTED TECHNOLOGY
The collection and management of consumers/users’ data will be governed by the General Data
Protection Regulations (GDPR).
6.0 HOW THE IDENTIFIED BARRIERS CAN BE ADDRESSED
Our company management needs to familiarise themselves with the requirements of the GDPR.
