10. AWS Console (Getting Started with AWS Direct Connect)
To use AWS Direct Connect, you simply:
● Decide on an AWS Direct Connect location, how many
connections you would like to use, and the port size. Multiple
ports can be used simultaneously for increased bandwidth or
redundancy.
● Use the AWS Management Console to create your connection
request(s).
● If you are connecting from a remote location, you can work with
an APN Partner supporting Direct Connect or a network carrier
of your choice.
● Once your request is confirmed, you will receive an email which
contains a Letter of Authorization – Connecting Facility
Assignment (LOA-CFA).
● Provide the LOA-CFA to an APN Partner or your service provider
who will establish the connection on your behalf.
● Once the connection is up, use the AWS Management
Console to configure one or more virtual interfaces to establish
network connectivity.

AWS Direct Connect enabled by Megaport involves fewer steps,
automates the order process allowing for provisioning of Direct Connect
within minutes, and does not require the need to use a traditional network
service provider.
● Use the Megaportal to design and deploy Megaports and
VXCs to AWS Direct Connect locations
● Once your request is confirmed, you will receive an email which
contains a Letter of Authorization – Connecting Facility
Assignment (LOA-CFA).
● Once the connection is up, use the AWS Management

14. Anatomy of a VPC and VGW
○ A VPC is a collection of IP subnets containing EC2 instances
○ EC2 is the building block supporting a number of AWS services
● RDS, Workspaces, ElastiCache, Redshift
○ Two main gateway types in VPC
● IGW - internet access
● VGW - Direct Connect & VPN
○ VGW is a virtual router that facilitates connectivity between the VPC and
customer network
○ A VGW can terminate more than one Direct Connect for redundancy

15. Megaport VXC (Virtual Cross Connect)
○ A Megaport VXC (layer 2 vlan) is a connection from a port in the customer DC direct to a Virtual
Gateway in AWS
○ Using a VXC skips the AWS hourly port-hour fees for the end customer - Megaport absorbs up to
$1620/mo (10G DX port) and does not pass this along to the customer
○ Customers are charged for egress data direct by AWS at more favorable rates (i.e. approximately
$0.030 per GB in the US) per https://aws.amazon.com/directconnect/pricing/
○ VXC minimum term in M2M
○ VXC has flat rate pricing: $200/mo (in zone) or $400/mo (across zone) with up to 10 Gbps capacity
per VXC
○ VXC and VPC have 1:1 relationship
