This document discusses and provides examples of different sectors involved in physical education and recreation in communities. It describes the public sector which includes schools, recreation centers, and early childhood programs that are funded by governments and accessible to the public. The commercial sector includes for-profit gyms and fitness studios. The volunteer sector consists of non-profit community organizations. š Considered a Public sector : Part of a School District (SD43) Public Post-secondary Institution. Municipally and
provincially controlled. Separate legal entity, receives government funding and collects some fees from
participants. Accessible to general public attending that school.
š Considered recreation: Physical activity, includes different sports. Allows participants to improve their physical and
social well being. Linked to recreation since it enables, fitness, events, leadership and inclusive to low-income
individuals. (Lunn, 2020).
š Involves Coaching: Requires the participation of volunteer coaches in the community and or volunteers from the
school.
š Involves physical education: As a part of high-school and athletics physical education is required for students.
Informs participants on safety during exercise, its importance, anatomy, and tips on maintaining physical health for
life.

4. Coquitlam School
District Strongstart

š Considered a Public Sector: Offered by a public school district (SD43). Free
for participants, granted by Government funding. Accessible to public, for
parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children 0-5 years old. Provincially
& municipally organized.
š Considered Recreation: Incorporates physical activity, nature play, problem
solving, and music and movement. Provides the opportunity to learn about
the local community's programs that provide support for families and early
childhood development (Strongstart, 2010).

5. Guilford Recreation Centre

š Considered Public Sector : Offers free, or discounted programs to all members of the
public. Receives money from city hall/tax-payer money as funding. Municipally run
and funded. Inclusive and provides services for all individuals who have varying
income, age, gender, ethnicity and abilities.
š Considered Recreation: Provides a safe and welcoming environment for all in the
community to partake in leisure and recreation. Includes: educational programs,
swimming, Ping-Pong, walking track, badminton, basketball, programs for the non-
sighted, and more. Promotes social and physical health of the community.
š Includes Coaching: Hires coaches to lead different programs including summer
programs, wrestling, basketball etc.

6. Commercial/ Private Sectors
š Services where participants pay and the supplier makes a profit (MacLean, Peterson, &
Martin, 1985, p. 220).
š Provides a business opportunity while supporting the health of the community.
š Local private recreation can be split up into three different categories : Outdoor, indoor,
and clubs (Lunn, 2020).

pay a heightened fee for personal training
services. Company is profiting. Would be
considered a local indoor fitness club.
š Considered Recreation: Provides communities
with more recreation opportunities. Participants
are exercising for their own pleasure and
wellbeing. Provides the group with a feeling of
community within the club, good for social and
mental health of members.
š Includes Coaching: Trainers and coaches are
involved providing feedback and tips to
members. Educating on proper techniques and
safety concerns. Could be considered physical
education where participants learn about the

9. Oxygen Yoga and Fitness

š Considered Commercial: Oxygen Yoga profits from its
customers. Would be considered a local indoor
recreation facility. Provides employment and business
opportunities.

space for competition and physical activity.
Coaches are volunteers responsible for
guiding the safety of players and
encouraging their enjoyment of the sport.

12. Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club

certain fee where the club covers costs of fields,
equipment, and uniforms. Is sponsored by Ford.
Would be considered an outdoor recreation club.
Non-profit. Board is volunteers. Focuses on fundraisers

environment for members to develop their physical
health through soccer and conditioning. Helps
develop members social wellbeing.

Considered Volunteer: Mainly based on fundraisers. Non-profit organization.
Registration fees cover facility costs and entry into competitions and events.
The public and volunteer sector work together in organizing events in
facilities, important for the future of recreation (Karlis, 2011 & Lunn, 2020).
Considered Recreation: Provides a fun and safe environment for
participants to partake In speed skating. Plays an important role in keeping
the community healthy and involved. Low registration costs are important in
keeping members involved and more equal opportunities for members of
the community.
