Five-paragraph argumentative essay
A common method for writing an argumentative essay is the five-
paragraph approach.
• an introductory paragraph
• three body paragraphs
• a conclusion. (restates your thesis and summarizes all of the
arguments made in your body paragraphs.
ESSAY OUTLINE
• Since essay writing is a process, it is very important to make an
outline before hand.
• An outline is written mostly in points, not full sentences.
I. Introduction
• Get the reader's attention – ask a leading question; give definition of
some terms, describe background information of the topic (5Wh -
what, when, where, who, why). You could also start with a related
quote, description, or narrative.
Thesis Statement
• State the thesis – what you are going to discuss. You could state your
position on the issue and the main points that will develop your
argument (usually placed in the last sentence of introduction
paragraph).
II. Body
1. First Argument : your opinion in a complete sentence.
A. Supporting evidence (examples, facts, theories, statistics, quoted authorities,
details, reasons, etc.)
B. Supporting evidence (optional)
2. Second Argument : your opinion in complete sentence
A. Supporting evidence (examples, facts, theories, statistics, quoted authorities,
details, reasons, etc.)
B. Supporting evidence (optional)
3. Third Argument : your opinion in complete sentence.
A. Supporting evidence. (examples, facts, theories, statistics, quoted authorities,
details, reasons, etc.)
B. Supporting evidence (optional)
III. Conclusion
• Summarize your thesis statement and how your evidence supports
your points.
• If you can, persuade the reader.
Example Outline
I. Introduction:
• Many people who smoke
• Result: Various health problems
• Thesis statement: Although there are some arguments on both
sides, here are the solid reasons why the smoking ban is a must
Body I
• Topic Sentence (opinion): Smoking is unhealthy.
Supporting evidence: people in the US have asthma etc.
Body II
• Topic sentence (opinion): Smoking is not good for our environment.
Supporting evidence: family can be hurt
Additional supporting evidence: Environmental damage
Body III
• Topic sentence (opinion): Smoking is expensive
Supporting evidence: addiction which costs money
Additional supporting evidence: number showing how much smoking
cost
Conclusion
• Smoking has negative effects
• Smoking should be illegal
