2. Ilaria Urbinati is a firm believer in what she calls "aggressive styling."
Her looks don't always value subtlety — in fact, they oftentimes steer clear of it. Bright colors,
vintage standards, and unique prints or patterns are all the name of her game. She's never
scared of breaking fashion rules, unspoken or otherwise.
For Urbinati, a celebrity stylist whose clients include Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Ryan
Reynolds, and Donald Glover, this ability to help men stand out in unexpected or risky ways on

3. the red carpet while still looking comfortable and like, well, themselves has proven successful.
She's been lauded for her creativity and boldness, particularly with the aforementioned Glover's
style, as her growing list of male clients hit red carpet premieres and late-night talk shows.
As she told MensHealth.com, it's a "niche" she created for herself after working on shows like
The L Word and collaborating with brands like Strong Suit.

What's most important for Urbinati is remaining true to the men beneath the clothes,
something she says keeps the process "collaborative" and "inspiring."

5. "Different guys inspire different things," Urbinati says. "My number one aim is for each guy to
look like themselves."
That said, Urbinati does follow some simple, consistent tactics as she dresses different clients,
all of which can easily translate beyond the confines of a red carpet or a certain tax bracket.
Here are a few of the tricks of the trade that she's learned and perfected during her career.
1. Knits and silks will be your new best friends.

For guys like The Rock, who may be a bit on the muscular side, Urbinati recommends straying
away from confining button-up shirts or ill-fitting tops. These can appear "boxy" on bulky guys
with broad shoulders and smaller waists.
Instead, Urbinati dresses muscular clients in knits and silks, which she says are more "fluid"
and appear more tailored. These fabrics cling to the body in all the right places (hello, biceps!)
and look a bit more "effortless" while emphasizing the muscles.
"What's the point of hiding all that work?" Urbanati asks. Good point.

Speaking of effortless, Urbinati prefers skipping the ties on many clients, even if they're wearing
suits or heading to a more formal event.
Right now, one of Urbinati's favorite trends is for men to leave their top few buttons undone,
showing off a little chest hair or more of their collarbones. It's a little less stuffy than being all
buttoned up.
3. And neither are matchy-matchy suits.

One rule Urbinati isn't afraid of breaking? Matching. Instead, she pairs together blazers, pants,
and vests in different colors, a creative take on the usual, run-of-the-mill suit.
Not only does this tend to look a bit more badass on the red carpet, it's easier for men with
muscular, top-heavy body types. Urbinati can go a size down in pants or size up in blazers of
different types and colors to make sure that the individual pieces fit the body perfectly.
4. Embrace one color.

If she's going to do matching, Urbinati prefers a little bit of color play. She loves the "tonal
look," pairing together shades of red, blue, or purple.
"It makes everybody look long and lean," Urbinati says. "It flatters everybody."
To break up an otherwise monochromatic look, she'll throw in belts or shoes of a different color
to create a contrast.
5. Don't be afraid of a little ice.

Both The Rock and Donald Glover have been known to rock a chain, but Urbinati doesn't stop
there when it comes to adding some shiny touches to an outfit.
She says that jewelry is one of her favorite trends for men right now, particularly gold
medallions and pinky rings. Urbinati mentions David Yurman as a classic when it comes to
finding the right pieces to add to an outfit.

For Urbinati, it's all in the details. This could mean pulling the color from a shirt for a matching
blazer or the size of a hem, but either way, "the little things can elevate a look."
20. She says that she looks at even the "smallest common denominator" of an outfit in order to
determine a more fully realized vision. Usually, she'll accessorize based on the small details that
she likes in order to add a bit of emphasis on an outfit's strengths.
7. Most importantly, have fun.

22. "Guys need to have fun," Urbinati says. "Guys like Donald Glover look great and have fun
because they're not taking it too seriously." Crazy colors, unique prints, and even bell bottoms
(among Urbinati's favorite trends of the moment) are never off limits.
So if you're hoping to rock a '70s-style powder blue tuxedo, Urbinati has two words for you:
"Why not?"
