2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Medro amp Mariana serve one kind of sandwich one kind of .pdf
1. Medro & Mariana serve one kind of sandwich, one kind of cheesecake, and one size of coffee.
> On the average they sell:
. 200 pieces of cheesecake per week
. 300 sandwiches per week
. 500 coffee drinks per week
> They sell each:
. piece of cheesecake for 2 KD
. sandwich for 1.750 KD
. cup of coffee for 1.500 KD
> They have 5 employees
. each employee works 6 days a week
. each employee is paid 3 KD/hr
. each employee works 10 hrs/day
. each employee is paid 180 KD/wk
> overhead costs = half of the total labor cost
> total weekly material costs = 700 KD/wk
Questions:
1- What is (M&M)s weekly material productivity?
a. not enough information to compute material productivity
b. 2.393
c. 1.046
d. none of the above.
2-What is (M&M)s weekly multi-factor productivity?
a. 0.817
b. 1.811
c. 1.726
d. none of the above.
3- Medro & Mariana would like to achieve a weekly labor-material productivity = 1.250 by
increasing the price of their sandwich. What should the new price be that will help them achieve
this productivity?
a. approximately 2 KD/sandwich.
b. approximately 2.850 KD/sandwich.
c. approximately 2.250 KD/sandwich.
d. not enough information to answer the question.
4- Medro was studying how the cleaning person was cleaning the floor. She would sweep the
floor, mop the floor, and then when the floor was dry, she would sweep it again. Medro thought to
himself: why does she sweep the floor after mopping it? There is no need for this step. Which of
2. the 7 wastes is this waste considered?
a. an over-production waste.
b. a motion waste.
c. an over-processing wast.
d. an un-used talent waste.
5- Medro and Mariana decided to open a playground for children in the garden of (M&M). They
wanted to play a role in sustainability, so, they looked for a second hand playground. They are
most likely mainly thinking about:
a. recycle.
b. reuse.
c. eco-friendly design.
d. reduce.
e. over-production.
6- Medro was talking to his sister one day: Mariana, when you look at the work flow inside of
(M&M) from the moment a customer orders until he/she receives the order, you can see a supply
chain. This supply chain needs to be managed properly. Mariana said: Medro, what you are
saying is silly , supply chains and supply chain management is something you only find outside
organizations not inside. Our supply chain is our suppliers and our delivery people. We are not a
part of our supply chain, we just manage them.
a. what Medro says makes sense.
b. what Mariana says makes sense.
c. they both make sense.
d. neither make sense.
7- Medro & Mariana were discussing one day about (M&M)s labor productivity in making the
sandwiches. The bread is made in their fire-wood oven which operates on special wood that gives
off a higher temperature than other types of wood and lasts longer as well. They noticed that the
number of sandwiches per shift made by an employee was lower than before. They studied the
cause and found that according to the employee responsible to ordering the wood, the wood
normally used to fire the oven was not available in the market. So, without telling Medro, he
bought another kind of wood thinking all wood is the same. As a result, the oven temperature was
not as high as before and thus, it took longer to bake the bread used to make the sandwiches
causing a delay in preparing the sandwiches. Which of the 7-Ms would best describe the REAL
MAIN reason for the lower productivity in sandwich making?
a. the employee did not tell Medro he was ordering different wood.
b. the morale in (M&M) was down.
c. the wood was not the wood normally used to heat the oven and bake the bread.
d. there was not enough money to buy wood.
3. 8- Liliana passed by to visit Medro & Mariana one day. She said to them: I heard that many
Chinese students and Chinese families have moved to Kuwait. So, Medro & Mariana, if you wish
to attract them to (M&M), you need to study all about China, Chinese traditions, and what they like
to eat. Do this so that you can offer menu items that will encourage them to come.
Which of the STEEP forces was Liliana talking about that she believes will have an effect on
(M&M)?
a. social force.
b. technological force.
c. economical force.
d. environmental force.
e. political force.
9- Medro was talking to Mariana about expanding their business to serve coffee, sandwiches, and
mini cheesecakes by January 2025 at any location requested by a customer. They will call this
service (M&M)-Mobile. Liliana loved the idea and said: what a beautiful mission.
a. what Liliana said was correct.
b. what Liliana said was not correct.
10- Mariana was telling Medro: we need to double (M&M)s total productivity. After thinking about
what she said for a while, he told Mariana: We need to find ways to reduce the total input cost in
half. If we do this, our total productivity will double.
a. what Medro said is correct thinking.
b. what Medro said is not correct thinking.
11- Mariana was telling Medro: we have been doing well Medro, let us do giving the fasting people
food this coming ramadan and distribute 30 complete meals each day of ramadan to the families
in need . We will make these families happy and we will show how fortunate we are to do so.
Medro agreed to Marianas idea. What this activity will achieve is a good example of:
a. a mission statement.
b. a strategy.
c. an output.
d. an outcome.
