Enhancing Entrepreneurial Skills in School
Facilitated by: Shiv Kandel
TFN Fellow (2014-2016)
Objective: Students will be able
1) To know about the process of starting the business.
2) To experience the applied part of Profit and Loss.
3) To promote local fruits and food items.
4) To aspire students who want to be businessman in future.
Class 8 were excited to learn about profit and loss after seeing Class 10 running a food fair in the school
premises for the similar purpose. We discussed to run a food fair for 1 hour in Lunch break on 23rd
Mangsir, 2072. We spent some time on Need and Supply analysis.
Need Finding: Due to Indian blockade there is scarcity of food items like rice and pulses to run our Mid-
Day Meal program in school. Mid day Meal is a program initiated by Teach for Nepal after the
devastating earthquake happened in second week of the school year. We could only supply the beaten
rice and Dalmot. We thought of adding some option for a day in the same program.
Supply conclusion: We brainstormed about the food items that people like the most and at the same
time it can be sold to them during the break. We also checked the availabilities of food items in village
itself. We also became very conscious about the price because the cheaper the food, the more attracted
will be the students. So, we finalized to sell Sandekho Gundruk, Cooked beans vegetables, Sadekho
Nibuwa, hot milk and sugarcane which was easily available in the community.
Marketing strategies: When Class 10 did the fair, they could only make Rs.15 as a profit. I shared about
the reason why they couldn’t make much profit from their business. And, it was due to weak marketing
strategies. And, they came up with strong and effective marketing strategies to make the business
profitable which are as follows:-
a) On 21st
Mangsir, Norsang Jimba announced about the fair in School Assembly.
b) Designed handmade invitation cards for the class teachers requesting to follow the information
to their respective classes.
c) Grade 8 personally informed to the small students about the fair in Tamang language during the
school time and asked them to bring some money not extending more than Rs. 10 from their
parents.
d) Designed the posters and stuck on the walls where students gather the most.
e) And, on the finalizing the location they chose the place right next to Canteen where Beaten rice
and Dalmot were distributed.
Responsibility details: When every detailed plan was ready, students were given individual and group
responsibility to make the fair happen effectively and smoothly. We bought everything that was
practically possible from the community and collected on 22nd
Mangsir. Kelshang Jimba took the
responsibility to cook the beans , Norsang Jimba and Ajay Blon were responsible to bring sugarcane,
milk, and Gundruk. Kabita Jimba purchased Nibuwa from her own house. We also rented the some
required utensils. Responsibility details on the fair are as follows:
a) Prakash Thing- Designed handmade coupons with team and kept all the monetary record that
were involved during the fair.
b) Ajay Blon- Registered the names of the customers and things they purchased individually to
make the business transparent and accountable.
c) Shayam Maya Jimba- Distributed the coupons to the customers when the registrations work in
finished.
d) Amrit Jimba and Suraj Moktan- Responsible to sell the milk.
e) Buddhi Maya Blon and Rita Moktan- Responsible to Sell the Sadeko Nibuwa.
f) Sarita Jimba, Nigma Blon and Rashmita Moktan- Responsible to sell Gundruk.
g) Norsang Jimba, Kelshang Jimba and Kabita Jimba- Responsible to sell the cooked beans.
h) Dipendra Blon- Responsible to sell sugarcane.
i) Shiv Kandel- Acted as a local bank
Menu list:
a) Cooked beans - 1 plate - Rs. 10/-
b) Gundruk – 1 plate- Rs. 5/-
c) Sadekho Nibuwa- 1 plate – Rs. 10/-
d) Hot Milk – 1 glass – Rs. 15/-
e) Sugarcane – 1 stick – Rs. 20/-
Theory of business- In the process of developing an idea and making strategies for making a profitable
business we learnt a very important aspects of businesses. For succeeding in business, first we need to
identify the necessity of majority people. We should look to the life around and analyze the need of
people.
For example:
a) A hungry person will surely buy the food if you are the only person to sell the food items there
around.
b) If person’s slipper torn away and couldn’t mend it right away, then he will surely look for the
slipper shop around.
After, getting some strong sense of the need, we should look on our own potential and check if we could
address their needs. If yes, then how? Do we need more people to work together? Do we need the
more investment than we could afford? Do we have enough skill and resources? The search of these
answers will be the first step of the business. After, getting the inquiries answered, then only we could
make the people need, our own business.
The successful business has a good marketing strategies and a best team work. The every member of
the team should have the sense of ownership towards the business. A successful businessman has a
good planning, communicating and negotiating skills. A person can only be appreciated by the world
only when s/he appreciates their team workers.
It is also our responsibility to promote the local products to the world. When you know the right way to
do, then everything is possible in business.
Business analysis:
Student took loan Rs. 660 from Shiv Kandel.
S.No. Items Cost price Selling price Profit Profit(%) Remarks
1. Milk Rs.60
Rs.5 ( rent
for glass)
Rs.120 Rs.55 91.67
2. Gundruk Rs.100 Rs.125 Rs.25 25
3. Cooked beans Rs. 15(
Tomato)
Rs.255(
beans)
Rs.5( rent for
plates)
Rs.420 Rs.145 52.72
4. Nibuwa Rs.25 Rs.35 Rs.10 40
5. Sugarcane Rs.75 Rs. 85 Rs.10 13.33
Total Rs.540 Rs.785 Rs.245 45.37 Rs.280( Error
in profit)
Based on the results, we reflected on some questions which are as follows:-
a) Why was there an error of Rs. 35 in the record file?
As we checked coupons, record file and cash, we found that Rs. 35 was missing in our cash
amount. It was sure that nobody had stolen that money from Prakash. It was due to sitting
arrangement of Prakash, Ajay and Shyam Maya. The process that they discussed earlier in the
class was first the customer registers from Ajay , then get the coupon from the Shyam Maya and
then pays cash to Prakash. But, in practice the process was same but the sitting arrangement
was not according to the steps and was not communicating well to customers, and it was chaos
for the customer which resulted an error in the registration file.
Learning: If the sitting arrangement was customer friendly, then there would have been an
accurate tracing of the sales.
b) Why milk got a maximum profit of 91.67%?
Milk was tasty, pure, hot and fresh which attracted people to purchase even they knew it was
costly than village price.
c) Why sugarcane got less profit of 13.33%?
Sugarcane sticks were cracked in the between and irregular size forced them to sell them in a
less price than the marked price. Also, they have a very less time to sell all those items.
d) Why they had difficulty to sell Gandruk?
The Gandruk was not as tasty as they marketed before the fair. Also, it was the first time they
made Gandruk ready in a large bulk. Experience matter in the taste was the learning.
Future investment: They made Rs. 245 profit altogether. And, they are planning to open their
class bank with that money.
Learning: If you have to make your profit double and triple you need to invest you some part of
the profit in something else again rather than parting and spending all the money in fun and
entertainment.
Realization: The truth is everyone wants money and most of us know that. And, as a teacher
or parent, we lack to teach these skills which will help to earn money in a right way. At last,
it’s not about how much you earn money; it’s about how you earn that money.

Sugarcane Rs.75 Rs. 85 Rs.10 13.33 Total Rs.540 Rs.785 Rs.245 45.37 Rs.280( Error in profit) Based on the results, we reflected on some questions which are as follows:- a) Why was there an error of Rs. 35 in the record file? As we checked coupons, record file and cash, we found that Rs. 35 was missing in our cash amount. It was sure that nobody had stolen that money from Prakash. It was due to sitting arrangement of Prakash, Ajay and Shyam Maya. The process that they discussed earlier in the class was first the customer registers from Ajay , then get the coupon from the Shyam Maya and then pays cash to Prakash. But, in practice the process was same but the sitting arrangement was not according to the steps and was not communicating well to customers, and it was chaos for the customer which resulted an error in the registration file. Learning: If the sitting arrangement was customer friendly, then there would have been an accurate tracing of the sales. b) Why milk got a maximum profit of 91.67%? Milk was tasty, pure, hot and fresh which attracted people to purchase even they knew it was costly than village price. c) Why sugarcane got less profit of 13.33%? Sugarcane sticks were cracked in the between and irregular size forced them to sell them in a less price than the marked price. Also, they have a very less time to sell all those items.
  • 8. d) Why they had difficulty to sell Gandruk? The Gandruk was not as tasty as they marketed before the fair. Also, it was the first time they made Gandruk ready in a large bulk. Experience matter in the taste was the learning. Future investment: They made Rs. 245 profit altogether. And, they are planning to open their class bank with that money. Learning: If you have to make your profit double and triple you need to invest you some part of the profit in something else again rather than parting and spending all the money in fun and entertainment. Realization: The truth is everyone wants money and most of us know that. And, as a teacher or parent, we lack to teach these skills which will help to earn money in a right way. At last, it’s not about how much you earn money; it’s about how you earn that money.
