Harnessing the Power of Healthcare Data: Are We There YetHealth Catalyst
What can healthcare learn from Formula One racing? According to Dr. Sadiqa Mahmood, SVP of medical affairs and life sciences for Health Catalyst, race support teams leverage about 30TB of baseline data to create a digital twin of the car, track, and racer for simulation models that drive decisions at each race. Applied in the healthcare setting, a digital twin can help clinicians better understand each patient and their health conditions and circumstances in real time and make comprehensive, informed care decisions. But for the healthcare digital twin to happen, the industry must move away from data silos and towards a digital learning healthcare ecosystem.

ESR spectroscopy in liquid food and beverages.pptxPRIYANKA PATEL
With increasing population, people need to rely on packaged food stuffs. Packaging of food materials requires the preservation of food. There are various methods for the treatment of food to preserve them and irradiation treatment of food is one of them. It is the most common and the most harmless method for the food preservation as it does not alter the necessary micronutrients of food materials. Although irradiated food doesn’t cause any harm to the human health but still the quality assessment of food is required to provide consumers with necessary information about the food. ESR spectroscopy is the most sophisticated way to investigate the quality of the food and the free radicals induced during the processing of the food. ESR spin trapping technique is useful for the detection of highly unstable radicals in the food. The antioxidant capability of liquid food and beverages in mainly performed by spin trapping technique.
When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.
The technology uses reclaimed CO₂ as the dyeing medium in a closed loop process. When pressurized, CO₂ becomes supercritical (SC-CO₂). In this state CO₂ has a very high solvent power, allowing the dye to dissolve easily.
The cost of acquiring information by natural selectionCarl Bergstrom
This is a short talk that I gave at the Banff International Research Station workshop on Modeling and Theory in Population Biology. The idea is to try to understand how the burden of natural selection relates to the amount of information that selection puts into the genome.
It's based on the first part of this research paper:
The cost of information acquisition by natural selection

The binding of cosmological structures by massless topological defectsSérgio Sacani
Assuming spherical symmetry and weak field, it is shown that if one solves the Poisson equation or the Einstein field
equations sourced by a topological defect, i.e. a singularity of a very specific form, the result is a localized gravitational
field capable of driving flat rotation (i.e. Keplerian circular orbits at a constant speed for all radii) of test masses on a thin
spherical shell without any underlying mass. Moreover, a large-scale structure which exploits this solution by assembling
concentrically a number of such topological defects can establish a flat stellar or galactic rotation curve, and can also deflect
light in the same manner as an equipotential (isothermal) sphere. Thus, the need for dark matter or modified gravity theory is
mitigated, at least in part.

Immersive Learning That Works: Research Grounding and Paths ForwardLeonel Morgado
We will metaverse into the essence of immersive learning, into its three dimensions and conceptual models. This approach encompasses elements from teaching methodologies to social involvement, through organizational concerns and technologies. Challenging the perception of learning as knowledge transfer, we introduce a 'Uses, Practices & Strategies' model operationalized by the 'Immersive Learning Brain' and ‘Immersion Cube’ frameworks. This approach offers a comprehensive guide through the intricacies of immersive educational experiences and spotlighting research frontiers, along the immersion dimensions of system, narrative, and agency. Our discourse extends to stakeholders beyond the academic sphere, addressing the interests of technologists, instructional designers, and policymakers. We span various contexts, from formal education to organizational transformation to the new horizon of an AI-pervasive society. This keynote aims to unite the iLRN community in a collaborative journey towards a future where immersive learning research and practice coalesce, paving the way for innovative educational research and practice landscapes.

CIPS Sustainability Index
Rated Supplier
The CIPS Sustainability Index (CSI) is a collaboration between the Chartered
Institute of Procurement and Supply, the University of West England (UWE)
and PRGX. With research indicating that there were limited cross-industry
standards to assess all three pillars of sustainability for both suppliers and
buyers, the CIPS Sustainability Index was developed by the team to create a
consistent sustainability measurement to support purchasing and, in doing so,
create significant time and cost efficiencies.
To become a Sustainability Index Rated Supplier, STARLAB UK has been
through a rigorous, independent online audit endorsed by the Chartered
Institute of Purchasing and Supply. STARLAB UK‘s CIPS rating allows our
customers to achieve their own sustainable purchasing objectives.
Not only did STARLAB UK score 100% for environmental management, we
scored very favourably in the other two areas audited too:
ECONOMIC 89%
ENVIRONMENTAL 100%
SOCIAL 94%
STARLAB UK is proud to be rated as a top performing organisation; this is not
only for our size and industry sector, our rating is over and above the average
score for all CSI Suppliers!

Project Case Studies
Capatex
Capatex supplies technical textiles into a varied
marketplace including industrial, agricultural,
horticultural and healthcare. It was looking to
expand its healthcare portfolio of products to
include disposable incontinence products. The
new product was designed to be thinner, lighter
and more absorbent than its competition and
includes wetness indicator technology.
Capatex needed to design the product and
packaging, develop a prototype, and ensure
that it adhered to the correct medical device
regulations. The company first met with an
INSTILS adviser, who found where help was
most needed. It was identified that a lack of
resources was the largest obstacle to the
project’s completion.
Through INSTILS, Capatex received a £20,000
innovation grant to help accelerate the project
and take on more staff to manage the increased
workload. If support was not available, product
development would have taken place on a much
longer timescale, with an expected completion
time of 18-24 months.
“We found INSTILS support in completing
the paperwork, as well as Medilink EM’s
knowledge of the sector and industry contacts
to be an invaluable help. Our business is truly
in a better place because of INSTILS.” Gabriel
Strauss, Capatex, Managing Director.
INSTILS
ITS Designs is one of the UK’s leading innovators
and manufacturers of care alarm systems. The
company created the Alert-iT radio system and
pager, which is a proven, failsafe alarm system
for protecting the handicapped and vulnerable.
Alert-iT Care Alarms wanted to evolve their
current technology to include low power
Bluetooth and connectivity to hospital nurse
call – and looked to Medilink EM for help.
To accelerate the project’s development,
innovation advisers worked with ITS Designs
and looked at where support could be offered. It
was found that limited resources was the largest
obstacle for the business and that ITS Designs
could be eligible for SoLSTICE support. Project
advisers assisted ITS Designs throughout the
application process and the company received
£7,170 SoLSTICE funding. This has helped ITS
Designs to get its improved technology closer to
market far quicker than would have otherwise
been possible.
“Medilink EM came to our office and helped us
with the details of the application process for
SoLSTICE. They have been involved through
every step of the process to secure funding
and answer any questions we have had as the
project runs through to completion”.

TigTag is a Lincoln-based technology company.
Their first product is a wearable device, providing
an alarm for high-risk groups - including
people who are cognitively impaired, frail and at
risk of falls. TigTag had to finalise prototypes,
manufacture the first 100 units, secure their IP
and enter the market - but was unsure how to
proceed.
TigTag approached Medilink EM and advisers
worked to understand their situation. It was
found that the company had limited market
access and it was also highlighted that they
could apply for LARIS support. Advisers helped
TigTag throughout the application and introduced
them to Accelerate Associates, a Life Sciences
marketing company, to help TigTag expand its
market knowledge and establish entry points.
This, in addition to a £10,000 LARIS grant -
funded by the EMAHSN - has helped to finalise
prototypes and secure their IP.
“Through LARIS, we’ve been able to take pro-
active steps towards developing our product.
We are currently collaborating with Accelerate
Associates to find out what the market needs
from us and we will use this information to
develop our product further.” Michael Jacob,
Managing Director, TigTag Solutions.
“Companies like TigTag are a prime example
of what we’re trying to achieve through LARIS.
The support provided is helping companies in
Lincolnshire and Rutland to bring their ideas to
life.” Mike Hannay, Managing Director, EMAHSN.

Canonbury Healthcare provides specialist footcare
products and wanted to centralise its data to
improve customer experience, particularly in
countries which struggle to access information
digitally. However, Canonbury was unsure how to
approach this and looked to Medilink EM for help.
Innovation advisers worked with Canonbury and
found that although the company has an extensive
product range, it is not always clear which is the
best treatment and there is potential for error. To
present the most accurate information possible,
Canonbury needed to streamline its data and
make its website universally accessible.
It was also identified that Canonbury could not
deliver the project within the desired timeframe.
Innovation advisers worked with Canonbury to
explore available options to solve this problem,

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Medilink EM aims to help members raise their profile and bring
like-minded organisations together to share their common interest and
passion for the life sciences sector.
Read about how these members have benefitted from the opportunities
available via membership.
Uvamed
Uvamed is the creator of Rainbow
Trays, which are tamper-evident,
ISO 26825 colour-coded trays for
anaesthetic drugs designed to reduce
medication error.
As a Medilink EM Member, Uvamed
was able to take advantage of the
growing relationship between Medilink
Midlands and the City of Mentor, USA.
Uvamed went on its first ever
transatlantic trade mission in October
2018, which would not have been
possible without Medilink EM.
Northeast Ohio is a rapidly growing
centre of innovation in Healthcare,
MedTech and Bioscience. They are
looking to encourage collaboration
with companies and healthcare
providers in their area on an
international basis and the City of
Mentor offered Medilink EM and
Uvamed the opportunity to visit
the Cleveland Clinic 2018 Medical
Innovation Summit.
The City of Mentor is part of a cluster
of over 700 Life Science companies.
Many of the Life Science companies
in Northeast Ohio have grown up
around the Cleveland Clinic, one of the
world’s leading hospitals for research,
education and health information.
Going forward, as Uvamed continues
to grow and develop, the company
anticipates that Medilink EM will
continue to be an essential part of its
development.
THE UNIVERSITY
OF DERBY
The University of Derby is a
modern university focused on
delivering excellence across
the region. Its leading-edge
research in life sciences,
healthcare, advanced
manufacturing and data
sciences delivers real impact
for the university and its partner organisations.
The University of Derby was looking to engage further with life science
companies in the East Midlands and looked to Medilink EM, as the focal point
of life science business support in the region, for assistance.
Upon joining Medilink EM as a Patron organisation, the University of Derby
capitalised on the opportunities now open to it and shared its ambition of
connecting with life science companies in the East Midlands to a greater
extent, with Medilink EM.
Medilink EM was able to set up and manage a business event, hosted at
the University of Derby’s Enterprise Centre (pictured) in May 2019 and drew
on its extensive network to bridge the gap between academia and industry,
connecting the university with life science companies to a far greater extent
than it would have been able to do alone.
Plastek UK
Plastek are a leading provider of
plastic packaging to the consumer,
personal care, infant nutrition,
food and healthcare markets. The
company was interested in learning
more about the medical industry and
saw Medilink EM membership as a
way of achieving this.
One area in which Plastek wanted
assistance and clarification was
CE marking. Medilink EM was able
to help the company by making
introductions between Plastek and
specialist consultants in the Medilink
EM member network.
In addition, they were advised of
relevant industry training events
such as the Medilink EM course
on the Medical Device Regulation.
This served to further increase their
understanding of the sector and
has helped Plastek to tailor their
products and services and enter the
healthcare market with products that
meet their customer’s needs and
adhere to the proper regulations.
