3. WELCOME
When I wrote the introduction to our Annual Report
last year, we had just made it through the first full year
of the COVID-19 pandemic. I wrote of the resilience
demonstrated by Medilink Midlands and our Members and
Patrons, and how the Midlands life sciences ecosystem
rose to the challenge, adapted, and delivered in such
difficult circumstances.
This year, in the face of headwinds, Medilink has delivered
outstanding results while continuing to invest for the
future. As we look to a future post-European funding,
our organisation must transform and adapt again to the
new environment in which we find ourselves. Medilink
Midlands has delivered real, tangible value to the
Midlands life sciences community, and our strong track
record combined with our team’s knowledge, capabilities,
experience and expertise, will ensure that we are well
placed to continue leading the Midlands life sciences
industry.
“Medilink Midlands has delivered
real, tangible value to the Midlands
life sciences community”
Medilink Midlands sits at the heart of academia,
businesses, clinicians and Government throughout the
Midlands, and our influence and connections help to
bring these elements together to become greater than
the sum of their parts. Throughout this report, you will
see how Medilink works alongside the entirety of the
Midlands life sciences ecosystem and through our work,
in collaboration with our Members, Patrons and partners,
we help the Midlands life sciences economy to grow and
create an attractive proposition for investment.
Last year, I also mentioned the need to collectively ensure
that ‘levelling up’ is a dynamic opportunity realised by all.
Over the past year, we have seen ‘levelling up’ take centre
stage within Government and, going forward, I believe that
this will remain a key part of its strategy. I also believe that
Medilink, and the wider Midlands life sciences ecosystem,
have the necessary capabilities to seize the opportunities
that the Government’s ‘levelling up’ initiative presents.
This year, there have also been changes to the Medilink
Midlands organisational structure. Dr Darren Clark, who
was formerly Chief Executive of the company, has now
joined the Medilink Midlands Board as Deputy Chair,
and I look forward to his continued insight to help guide
Medilink Midlands going forward.
“We have world-class healthcare
businesses in our region, and
world-first medical innovations”
It is my great pleasure to welcome Simon Himsworth
as the new Chief Executive of Medilink Midlands. I am
confident that Simon’s industry knowledge and experience
will help Medilink to reach even greater heights. Simon
has spent over 25 years designing and leading the delivery
of business development and support programmes
including global life sciences industry transformations
that have driven significant efficiencies in multiple
geographies around the world.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us, healthcare is a
global subject and as Medilink Midlands moves forward,
I believe we can showcase the Midlands on the global
stage, and Birmingham’s delivery of the Commonwealth
Games in August was clear proof that this is possible. We
have world-class healthcare businesses in our region, and
world-first medical innovations. Throughout this Annual
Report, you will see how Medilink Midlands has delivered
demonstrable added value to the Midlands life sciences
sector, and how we will continue to ensure the Midlands is
the place where life science companies choose to set up,
develop and grow.

4. As Chief Executive of Medilink
Midlands, I’d like to welcome
you to our 2022 Annual Report,
which provides you with an
insight into our activities from
across the Medilink Midlands network, as well as the
region’s life sciences community.
Our strategy this year, as we prepare for the loss of EU
funding in 2023, has been about evolution not revolution,
and preparing the ground to ensure we will be able to
continue our regional sectoral support activities beyond
this loss of significant funding.
Medilink Midlands is the regional life sciences business
support delivery organisation, with specialist deployable
advisory and events teams. Working with our regional,
national, and global partners across both the public
and private sectors, we are now in great shape as we
enter 2023 and look forward to continuing to facilitate
collaborations and exciting industry support activities
between academics, the Government, businesses, and
clinicians.
Within our organisation, we are very proud to have
the sector specific skills, knowledge and expertise to
deliver specialist industry support and provide engaging
thought leadership material through our wide-ranging
events programme across the region. We have seen the
crucial role that the life sciences sector played during the
pandemic, and we need to ensure that as EU structural
funding ends, life science companies in the Midlands
continue to be supported to carry out their world leading
research, development and innovation.
We remain committed to championing and supporting
the region’s life sciences industry to enable businesses
to establish, develop and grow, boosting the Midlands’
economic output from life sciences and medical
technologies and creating sustainable MedTech and
HealthTech ecosystems.
As we look ahead to 2023, we will be enhancing and
evolving our membership offering, ensuring we provide
the best possible membership value proposition. Your
continued support directly helps us to provide industry
thought leadership, events, exhibition opportunities,
innovation days and our regional awards. We will continue
to help you thrive and protect your ‘licence to operate’
in this highly regulated and complex industry, as well
as providing your feedback directly to central and local
Government, as we have done this year, through our
Voice of Industry Report. These steps help ensure our
sector is well represented at the highest level within the
Government.
We’d like to thank Medilink Midlands’ Patrons and
Members for your valuable contribution, support, and
continual hard work over this last year - you really have
helped to make it a resounding success. We look forward to
working with you in 2023.

16. VOICE OF INDUSTRY REPORT
MIDLANDS IN FOCUS
Medilink Midlands has collaborated with its network to help deliver a number
of regional initiatives and projects:
Medilink Midlands has an established network of
MedTech, life sciences and support companies across
the Midlands region. We were able to draw upon our
extensive network and approached companies to
validate the challenges and barriers preventing them
from achieving their optimal growth and success.
Through this work, Medilink created the Voice of
Industry Report, which looks at where the Midlands
life sciences sector excels, and the barriers to growth
which are experienced by life sciences companies in
the region.
The report highlighted that the Midlands life sciences
ecosystem and support networks like Medilink are
invaluable assets to growth, and that there is great
support around what funding is available.
The general view of respondents was that key
organisations need to be more “joined up” and know
about each other and “who can offer what”. This is
very important for signposting and broadening your
network and knowledge. Medilink Midlands will work
with its Members and other partners to address these
challenges and help the Midlands network to innovate
and grow.
OFFICE FOR LIFE SCIENCES VISIT
In September 2022, Midlands Engine, Charnwood
Campus and Medilink Midlands welcomed Rosalind
Campion, the Director of the Office for Life Sciences
(OLS), to the Midlands to meet representatives of
businesses and organisations from our region’s health
and life sciences sectors.
Ms Campion outlined the role of the OLS in supporting
the implementation of the Government’s Vision for
Life Sciences and took part in a conversation with
delegates, at which they discussed shared concerns for
the onshoring and nearshoring of the manufacture of
pharmaceutical products and life sciences supply chain
resilience.
Topics also
included the need
for technical skills
especially at the
mid/senior levels
in the Midlands
and the role of
innovation, which
is a major theme of the Vision for Life Sciences. Also
discussed was the regulatory environment and the
challenges in getting innovative products to market in
the NHS.
Life sciences have increasingly become a regional
strength area, with the Midlands boasting over 1,200
life sciences businesses, including the UK’s highest
number of medical technologies companies, and
supporting over 33,000 high-skilled jobs. Our region
also drives the sector internationally, with world-class
universities, seven of which have medical schools,
promoting strong collaboration between Academia,
Industry and Health.
Combined with our manufacturing expertise, this
allows the Midlands’ strength in medical technologies
to provide an agile response to emerging challenges.
In medical technology, the region boasts the highest
number of UK companies and is the second-largest UK
employer. Medilink will continue to work closely with its
strategic partners across industry and Government to
address and, where possible, overcome current barriers
for growth, aiding the acceleration of innovation.
The report also identified challenges experienced by
Midlands life science companies, including in:
n Regulatory
changes
n
Supply chain
redevelopment
n
Skill demands

sectors
n Finance

17. THE CITY OF MENTOR, OHIO
Medilink Midlands and the City of Mentor are
continuing to develop their strategic collaboration
to promote bilateral trade and investment between
the Midlands and Northeast Ohio, through trade
missions and events. These trade missions have
already resulted in success as Medilink Midlands
Member Uvamed has set up a US office in Mentor,
having attended the very first Medilink Midlands
trade mission and Conference on Innovation in
2018.
In October 2022, a delegation from Mentor
visited the UK. Medilink Midlands and the
Greater Birmingham Transatlantic Chamber
of Commerce held an informal evening for life
sciences businesses to meet with representatives
from the City of Mentor. This
shows how Medilink are working
collaboratively globally, drawing
in global best practices, and
opening international markets
for those participating in our
programmes.
MIDLANDS CROSS-SECTOR
EVENT
Four business-led sector organisations came
together to host a unique cross-sector Open
House. The event was delivered by Aerospace
Unlocking Potential, which is led by the University
of Nottingham in partnership with the Midlands
Aerospace Alliance, and supports Midlands based
SMEs to diversify into and out of aerospace and
aviation.
Midlands Aerospace Alliance, Medilink Midlands,
Rail Forum and the Motorsport Industry Association
shared their knowledge of recent developments and
future opportunities for SMEs across the Midlands.
Case study SMEs also demonstrated how they have
successfully diversified into other sectors.
Additional support and funding is available through
Aerospace UP for any SMEs wanting to diversify into
(or from) aerospace, aviation, space or advanced air
mobility.
We know that great ideas and technologies from
businesses that are experts in one sector can be
applied to solve problems in another – and this event
provided a forum for Midlands SMEs to network
across all sectors and learn from one another.
On 8-9 June 2022, eight Medilink Member companies
exhibited and five were headline speakers at
Birmingham’s NEC as part of the national Med-

MED-TECH INNOVATION EXPO
INNOVATION DAY 2022
In May 2022, over 170 delegates from across the Midlands
came together for the region’s leading life sciences
business event, Medilink Midlands Innovation Day.
Medilink Midlands was delighted to welcome back the life
sciences community to our first major in-person event in
two years. The whole day was expertly hosted by Vivienne
Parry OBE, who chaired the formal talks and subsequent
panel discussion, encouraging audience engagement
throughout.
Sir John Peace, Chairman of Midlands Engine, headlined
the event. His talk emphasised the Midlands’ strength
in health and life science, as well as the importance of
having a strategic plan, engaging with Government as
one regional voice, raising awareness of the Midlands
MedTech cluster. He also highlighted the need to bring
together the spheres of academia, business, the NHS
and Government as the key to regional collaboration and
success.
The exceptional line-up of speakers included Rhys
Donovan, Group Marketing Director of Direct Healthcare
Group who presented on “How the UK can lead the way
in Healthcare Innovation” and Professor Michael Lewis,
Joint Director for the NIHR i4I and SBRI Healthcare
Programmes, whose presentation posed the question:
“Do I get my fair share of grant funding?”

HEAL.MED
CIC
PROJECT CASE STUDIES
Aspiration: Scale-up for full penetration of the
UK market and develop training programs for
healthcare staff.
Support: 1-1 Support, new connections and
contacts, including with the Department for
International Trade.
Results: HEAL.med’s app is now used by
children, young people and their parents in 67
UK specialist Paediatric Diabetes Centres. They
have trained over 1500 patients, had 15,000 app
downloads and currently have over 500 active
patients.
HEAL.med CIC (Health Education And Learning) is
a not-for-profit Community Interest Company set
up to deliver knowledge and education to support
diabetes patients. HEAL.med aims to ensure every
child diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes has access to
high quality and effective education through a Social
Enterprise. This is delivered as Deapp, pronounced
“Deep”, the Diabetes Education Application.
HEAL.med wanted to scale-up for full penetration of
the UK market and develop training programmes for
healthcare staff and allied professions to broaden
their portfolio and bring in further income.
A SoLSTICE Advisor met with HEAL.med to see
where support could best be offered. A full,
company-wide innovation diagnosis was performed
and it was found that, as a start-up, HEAL.med
could derive most benefit from funding and industry
contacts.
As part of the support offered by the SoLSTICE
project, the Advisor made the company aware of
relevant funding streams, referring them to the
Department for International Trade, putting them
in touch with the BioCity Accelerator programme
and introducing them to Spirit Healthcare, who also
specialise in diabetes diagnosis.
Since receiving SoLSTICE support, HEAL.med’s app
is now used by children, young people and their
parents in 67 UK specialist Paediatric Diabetes
Centres. Over 1500 patients have been trained and
the company has had 15,000 downloads of their app
and achieved over 500 current active patients.
The company is aiming for further roll-out in
2023/2024.
Aspiration: Begin a small pilot study within the
NHS, with the intention of scaling up to a large,
multi-centre clinical trial for their new ‘Alcostick’
– a handheld, rapid blood alcohol meter.
Support: Innovation grant, 1-1 support, facilitated
new connections contacts.
Results: Creation of new Surescreen factory and
warehouse facilities.
Since being founded in 1996, family firm SureScreen
Diagnostics has been at the heart of innovation
- creating unique alcohol testing devices in
ambulances, urine tests for GPs surgeries and now
the most accurate tests for Covid-19.
Surescreen’s rapid antigen tests for Covid-19 were
the first in Europe to pass the validation process in
the laboratory by Public Health England and have
been exported to 53 countries and dependencies.
The company has worked with Medilink for a
number of years and Medilink has supported
Surescreen throughout its growth and evolution.
Surescreen wanted to begin a small pilot study
within the NHS, with the intention of scaling up
to a large, multi-centre clinical trial for their new
‘Alcostick’ – a handheld, rapid blood alcohol meter.
Through the Medilink Midlands INSTILS project,
part-funded through the European Regional
Development Fund (ERDF), Surescreen was
supported with dedicated one-to-one support,
an Innovation Support Grant and introduced the
company to new connections contacts, as well
as making the company aware of relevant funding
opportunities, including via the Government’s
Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA).
“Medilink has been an invaluable help to
Surescreen Diagnostics. With their support we
were able to trial our medical technology in a
clinical setting, and the adoption of this technology
and the further growth opportunities provided as
a result have allowed us to fulfil a real need in
the UK life sciences market, at a time of national
crisis, and have put us at the forefront of disease
diagnosis, via our work with Testcard and Guys and
St Thomas NHS Trust.”

25. TCC-CASEMIX
Aspiration: Develop a novel hardware and
aligned software device to enable theatre nurses
to interact hands-free with a survey tool to record
‘real-time’ surgical procedure data.
Support: Innovation grant, 1-1 support,
facilitated new connections contacts.
Results: Securing of surgical transformation
joint working agreement with The Northern Care
Alliance NHS Group.
Awarded a place on the prestigious Global
Business Innovation Programme run by UK
RI. Won funded place as part of Natwest
Entrepreneur Hub.
TCC-CASEMIX Limited was conceived to address the
substantial inefficiency of surgical services delivery
in England. In seeking to mitigate the ‘bow-wave’
of demand from COVID-19 on the NHS, all other
healthcare needs have largely been considered as
a second-order priority, nowhere is this seen more
acutely than in elective surgery.
Even before the pandemic, elective surgery was
becoming an increasing burden on the health
system, with a backlog running into millions of
patients. If there is one service above all that needs
to be reset, then it is surgical services delivery.
Through the Medilink Midlands ACTIS project, part-
funded through the European Regional Development
Fund (ERDF), TCC-Casemix was supported with
dedicated one-to-one support, an Innovation
Support Grant and introduced the company to new
connections contacts.
Medilink also highlighted relevant funding
opportunities as well as making the company aware
of relevant funding opportunities, including via the
East Midlands Academic Health Science Network’s
Evaluation Fund, and invited the company to give
their views on the future of the Midlands MedTech
sector as part of a regional consultation.
Since receiving Medilink support, TCC-Casemix
has worked with The Northern Care Alliance (NCA)
and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, looking at
issues with surgical listing. The company has also
gone on to win an Innovate UK Smart Grant.

HeartFlow, the leader in
revolutionising precision
heart care, uniquely
combines human
ingenuity with advanced
technology to enable
physicians to precisely
diagnose and optimise
treatment for patients
with suspected coronary
artery disease. The HeartFlow FFRCT Analysis is a non-
invasive diagnostic tool that aids clinicians in determining,
vessel by vessel, both the extent of an artery’s narrowing
and the impact that the narrowing has on blood flow
to the heart. By identifying which patients do and don’t
require intervention, clinicians can reduce unnecessary
invasive testing, reduce healthcare system costs and
improve patient quality of life.

how to use the LIMS.
The project involved integrating Achiever Medical
LIMS with the lab’s existing qPCR machine and rack
scanners as well as receiving data from its newly
developed self-
registration portal
where students
and staff scanned
the testing kit QR
codes and completed
personal details.
This project has allowed Interactive Software Limited
to demonstrate its capabilities in delivering a system
quickly to meet immediate needs and provide
rapid changes as needs evolve, as has been the
case with Covid-19 testing protocols. Through this
project, Interactive Software Limited is also able to
demonstrate integration to third-party applications
and the ability to provide turn-key solutions within the
tightest of constraints. The system is primed to be
evolved for other testing requirements. It also supports
the University of Nottingham’s creation of a biobank
for future testing, giving longevity to the samples
collected – with appropriate informed consent.
Both organisations were committed to delivering the
project on time and delivering a solution that would
support the testing team in processing and managing
increasing sample volumes. Despite the challenges,
the project was completed within 12 weeks.

33. POWERBREATHE INTERNATIONAL
POWERbreathe is the manufacturer of a range of
inspiratory muscle training devices. Inspiratory
muscle training with POWERbreathe has been
scientifically proven to strengthen your breathing
muscles to help them cope with demands of
breathing, whether due to physical exercise or
illness. It is often dubbed as being like a ‘set of
dumbbells for your lungs’.
A problem had arisen with the POWERbreathe
operations manual and their Polish distributor.
POWERbreathe needed expert regulatory advice,
and sought Medilink Midlands assistance. Having
been a Medilink Member for a number of years,
POWERbreathe approached Medilink and asked
for their help in sourcing a regulatory expert
to help resolve the issue. Medilink was able
to put POWERbreathe in touch with four such
companies in its network and one in particular,
Advena, was able to help POWERbreathe resolve
their issue.
POWERbreathe has over 30 distributors
worldwide and in the past year alone, their
exports have increased by 21% which now
accounts for 96% of their business.
The University of Colorado chose the
POWERbreathe K-Series IMT devices to use
in part of their major clinical trial into the
effects of Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT)
on lowering blood pressure, reducing heart
attack risk, as well as boosting cognitive and
physical performance. During the trial, they
found significant drops in blood pressure and
improvements in large-artery function among
trial participants who perform POWERbreathe
IMT. As a result of this study being published,
POWERbreathe experienced an upsurge in
demand for their products not only in the USA but
also Europe and internationally.
IMED CONSULTANCY LTD
IMed is a MedTech regulatory and quality consultancy,
specialising in medical devices, software as a medical
device and IVDs. The company has been a Medilink
Midlands Member for over 3 years and Medilink has offered
consistent and varied support to IMed during that time,
by putting the company in touch with relevant client and
partner opportunities, organising events and in promoting
IMed Consultancy to our membership.
In recognition of IMed’s regular utilisation of Medilink
Midlands webinars and events, keeping their team in touch
with industry changes and free training, IMed wanted to
give back to the sector, which has supported their recent
business growth. So, they launched a series of regulatory
clinics to MedTech manufacturers with key regulatory
questions and queries, which they ran all through 2021.
IMed offered free 30-minute appointments on various
subjects including one on IVDR, in an effort to help IVD
manufacturers resolve confusion after changes to EU IVDR
deadlines. As part of IMed’s Medilink membership, Medilink
Midlands was able to recommend through its promotional
channels, including the Medilink Midlands website and
newsletter.
Another way in which Medilink Midlands helps its members
is by providing exhibition opportunities. As part of their
membership, IMed have always supported Medilink
Midlands’ annual Innovation Day, initially attending as
delegates. But in May 2022, they were able to exhibit for
the first time. Innovation Day saw over 170 delegates from
across the Midlands life science sector come together to
network and learn all about the latest sector developments.
IMed’s team made several material new client and
partner connections, on the day and took an active part in
promoting other members services too.
IMed was also one of 30 Member and Patron companies
that exhibited as part of Innovation Day and, as a result, the
company has been able to form new partnerships with a
number other Medilink Members.
IMed were so delighted with their exhibitor experience with
Medilink that they went on to also exhibit as part of the
Med-Tech Innovation Expo in June 2022, in the Medilink
Midlands Pavillion Zone. Speaking after the events, IMed’s
Business Development Director Al Mills, said:
“Medilink has always been a great help to IMed and, just
like the Medilink Innovation Day, the Med-Tech Innovation
Expo has been another fantastic example of this. The new
contacts that we made at these events and the resulting
collaborations that followed have been brilliant and
we can specifically track new business acquired and
strategic partner relationships forged, back to these
events. Of course, we also bumped into many of our
current clients while attending, so it was wonderful to
reinforce those relationships in person too.”
